We have just reviewed the Bakedin Mermaid Cake Baking Kit and the Sticky Toffee Mug Cake Mix. I have 4 girls aged 9 and 14, each of their faces lit up when they saw this. They decided they would make this between them since there was 4 layers of the cake. I supervised this and our 12 year old read the instructions, which I have to say were very clear and simple and the packets were marked clearly. The box contained all the dry mixtures needed/disposable cake tins/lining paper, a cake board, a measuring guide for butter, sprinkles, a skewer and some decorations, there was also a card which had the instructions (this was handy as the girls could have this one whilst I could check they were doing it properly from reading the instructions on the packaging), we just needed to add milk, 4 eggs and butter.
Each of them made a layer of the cake, they all had a different shade of pink that they kept comparing, once they had finished mixing and were happy, I popped the tins into the oven, the smell was amazing, the cakes were ready 5 minutes quicker than the time stated , we checked they were cooked properly this with the Skewer that came in the kit and left them to cool. After what seemed like a lifetime (actually just under 10 minutes) the cakes were cool so they started making the blue coloured icing, this caused a lot of arguments as they couldn’t agree on the shade of blue they wanted.
I put the first layer on the cake board and they took in turns to ice over their layer. I got the job of icing the sides which was quite tricky as the icing was quite runny and kept coming off as quick as I had put it on, much to the girls’ amusement. We put the cake in the fridge and left it to set, when it was ready I took it out and covered the cake with the left over icing, the instructions say to cover the top and sides of the cake as smoothly as you can (I promise I really did try this but instead of the calm water effect that’s pictured on the box, mine could only be described as a natural sea wave effect). I put the sprinkles on to try carefully placed to hide my lack of icing talent whilst the girls cut out the decorations they wanted.
When I cut into the cake the girls were impressed at the 4 different shades of pink and said it was cool. The end result was a lovely homemade cake and 4 proud girls, the box says it serves 12-24 and it does as we all (brother included) had a piece and we only used ¼ of the cake. It has to be the least messy baking session we have ever had. We usually end up with flour everywhere. I would definitely recommend this to people either to make themselves for a friend or to have delivered to somebody as a gift for them to make. 4/5 stars (1 taken off as the girls were upset that the cake toppers were not edible)
My son made the sticky toffee mug cake mix, he followed the simple instructions and I put it into the microwave for him, it cooked in the exact time stated on the box, I wasn’t sure if he would like it as she said it smelt like coffee when he was mixing it but when it was made and had cooled down, he tasted it and said it was gorgeous, we added some vanilla ice cream to make it an extra tasty treat, I had some of it too and have to say it tasted as nice as any hot puddings I have paid for when we have been out for a family meal. I would definitely buy these in future for a quick tasty amazing treat.
