Remembering breakfast. It’s something that often gets missed in the general morning flurry of three kids and two adults all needing to get to different places.

Well, my breakfast anyway. The kids enjoy theirs and the evidence of that is left all over the table and the floor.

Options on the school run aren’t of the healthy variety. Sweets or crisps from the convenience store, or something full of pastry from the bakers.

Frieda’s Feeding Bars have come in very handy! They’re small, but packed full of nutritious and busy-mum-friendly ingredients, slim enough to slip into a pocket or bag and brightly coloured enough to locate easily in amongst all the other stuff that somehow accumulates there.

The packaging claims that they are full of wholesome nuts and seeds that have lactogenic properties (lactogenic means ‘things that can help increase milk production’, and these ‘things’ are sometimes also callled ‘galactogogues’). And the Feeding Food bars also contain healthy fats that can count in a good way towards the extra calories needing for producing milk.

Opening the packet, you are immediately hit by the smell of fennel (an aniseedy kind of smell, if you’ve not experienced it before). I imagine that’s not a taste that suits everyone, but personally I do like fennel so it works for me. The bar itself I was kind of expecting to be a bit more crunchy, but actually its quite soft and flexible, even a little bit oily. It’s quite a nice texture as it turns out, and works well with the flavours which complement each other nicely – the strong earthy taste of the fennel is balanced by the sweetness of the pistachio nuts, and the oats work well alongside the firmer textures of the sunflower and flax seeds.

And as for the lactogenic properties? Well, I certainly haven’t had a problem with pumping milk (and I’ve been doing that regularly, having recently gone back to work) but I’ve never really had a problem in that area anyway. However, as a breastfeeding counsellor, galactogogues are something that I’ve researched previously and I know that oats and fennel do work for me for enhancing milk production. So it seems likely that these bars would do the trick, just as they say they do! I’ve noticed that my energy levels are better after eating them too.

  • A tasty and nutritious food bar specially designed for breastfeeding mums, created by a British mum
  • Based on an ancient recipe used by women in the Eastern world for hundreds of years
  • Just 187 calories, but packed with good fats and ‘galactalogues’ which are ingredients that may help boost your milk supply.
  • All-natural nutrition as nature intended – no need for extra added or fortified ingredients

Price wise they aren’t the cheapest of bars (they work out at £1.20 each, with a discount if you buy in larger quantities) but that’s about the same as a couple of bars of chocolate – and they’re much more tasty and far more nutritious too. So they’re good value for what you get.

Move over, sausage rolls. Feeding Food is here, and I’m sticking with it.

I’d give Feeding Food 4 out of 5 stars – I think the smell and taste might put some people off as it is quite strong, although personally I like it.
