On Friday afternoon we were lucky enough to be invited to enjoy a family lunch to review from the new lunch time menu at Frankie and Benny’s in Chester. This restaurant is located within the huge Greyhound retail park, which makes it ideally located if you’ve spent a hard day shopping! It is easy enough to find with plenty of parking spaces around.
On entering the restaurant we were promptly greeted and shown to our table. My two year old was immediately won over by being given a balloon, which as parents of toddlers may appreciate, made settling him at the table an easier job than may otherwise have been! Our drinks orders were taken and we had a look at the lunch menu. The lunch menu runs from 11am – 5.30pm, with a choice of 23 main courses from £5.95 to £7.95. Starters and main courses can be added at £2.50. There are also two kid’s menus available with a range of foods catering for kids up to the age of 11, at £4.25 for younger children and £7.75 for older children for a meal, dessert and refillable soft drink. These meals also come with an optional side salad, vegetables or beans. There were even baby meals suitable for babies from 7 months + on the menu so no member of the family need be left out on a family lunch. We were impressed at the range of dishes on offer for a lunch menu and had a hard time choosing.
The waiter we had was friendly and attentive, without being overbearing which I have found uncomfortable in some restaurants in the past. He took time to chat to the kids and made us all feel very welcome.
For starters I opted for cheesy garlic mushrooms, which were served with thick garlic ciabatta and my husband went for amazing skins with cheese and bacon. I felt the portion sizes were just right for a starter and we both really enjoyed what we’d ordered. The children’s dishes were also brought out with our starters. Our little boy had chicken bites with fries and vegetables. It was a massive plate for a toddler but he gave it a good go so I think he most definitely approved! Our ten year old daughter had ordered wrap it up chicken, which consisted of chicken bites with very fresh looking diced tomato, cucumber and carrot served on lettuce leaves with tortillas and pots of cheddar cheese and barbecue sauce. She was very impressed that she got to put her meal together herself and said it was delicious, which is praise indeed as her previous food critiques would put John and Greg to shame (although I don’t know if that says more about my cooking!!)
For the main course I went completely against my vow of healthy eating and had a philly cheeseburger, which was a great big 6oz burger topped with jalapeño cheese sauce, fresh baby gem lettuce, tomato, red onion, dill pickle, mayo and a pot of tomato-chilli relish and fries. It was a tasty treat though and worth every calorie! My husband had the ultimate hot dog. This was a hot dog topped with pulled pork, barbecue sauce and onions and served with fries and coleslaw. I’m not even a big fan of a hot dog but must admit to having slight food envy on seeing this.
Unfortunately for me the main course was so big I couldn’t manage a dessert but my husband was able to power through and order a cinnamon waffle crunch. Much to his annoyance I managed to sample some of it (for the purpose of the review of course) and I can confirm it was delicious. The kids were very excited to try the new dessert, the ice cream candy shop and I’m not surprised as it did look amazing. It arrived on a little crate containing a bowl with two scoops of ice cream (one vanilla and one chocolate), three glass bottles of sweets, a dish of mini marshmallows and some chocolate sauce. They loved adding the different sweets to the ice cream themselves and there was even little pick and mix bags for any leftover sweets to take home, this was a blessing as the little one didn’t want to leave any sweets uneaten!
The bill for lunch came to £52.05, which we thought was very reasonable for our meal and drinks and we were all more than satisfied with the amount of food we’d eaten.
Another thing that impressed me was the cleanliness of not only the restaurant area, but also the toilet and baby change facilities, which is particularly essential to me as a parent of young children.
Our whole experience at Frankie & Benny’s was great and I honestly couldn’t find fault with it. The friendly and welcoming atmosphere and value for money makes it a perfect place to enjoy a family lunch. I wouldn’t hesitate to go back or recommend it to friends.
I would definitely rate Frankie & Benny’s at the Greyhound retail park, Chester with 5 stars.
