The Theatre Royal in Brighton is probably one of my favourite theatres to go to. I love how traditional it is, the ambience, the decor. Even with its traditional appearance it fits in really well in the unique and Diverse Brighton. It really puts you in the right mood for whatever show you are going to see. The staff are always very polite, friendly, extremely well presented and on hand to help with any query that you may have. A bonus is that it’s minutes’ walk from car parks and local transport.

Last night I went to see Flashdance at this great venue…

Flashdance is an iconic romantic film that came out in 1983, the screenplay by Tom Hedley and it starred Jennifer Beals and Michael Nori. It wasn’t expected to be a hit, but it was a box office success becoming the third highest-grossing film of 1983 and it included several hit songs. So this production had big shoes to fill.

Being a big Strictly fan and watching Joanne Clifton win the show and a Christmas special I already knew the dancing was going to be spectacular. After all, the lead is not only a European champion but a World champion ballroom dancer.

What I didn’t expect was that voice! I was taken by surprise at actually how talented she really is and how amazing her vocal range is.

The show is long (2 hours 20 minutes, including 20 minute interval) but there is so much going on that the time just drifts away. It is fast paced with great songs and dance performances. There are also some great individual intricate storylines involving some of the other characters going on. Such as Gloria (Hollie-Ann Lowe), Andy (Rhodri Watkins) and Hannah (Carol Ball). They all stole the particular scenes they were in with their stage presence and talent.

The relationship between the characters Nick Hurley (Ben Adams) and Alex Owens (Joanne Clifton) was really believable with a real connection. Their voices complimented each other beautifully. The casting for these two characters was perfect.

Ben Adams portrayed the character of Nick Hurley really well and his vocal performances were stunning.

The performances of the night for me were ‘Gloria’ – Hollie-Ann Lowe, ‘I love rock and roll’ – Demmileigh Foster and lastly ‘Here and Now’ – Joanne Clifton and Ben Adams.

The whole cast was amazing and at the end of the show I was the first one on my feet to applaud them, quickly followed by everyone else in the audience.

The 80’s are back in all their glory, with thrilling choreography and number 1 hits! So grab your neon and leg warmers and go and see this fantastic rendition of an iconic 80’s movie. You won’t be disappointed.
