Edifier TWS1 Truly Wireless Stereo Earbuds Review

Reviewed by David Savage
Christmas will soon be here and lots of people will be getting new phones and tablets. There is so much technology built into our mobile devices that they are mini entertainment systems – you can play your favourite music, watch your favourite film or television show, browse YouTube for nonsense or useful tutorials and even play lots of games. Whilst all that is great, others don’t really want to hear all the noise that is created. But with a pair of earphones, nobody but you has to hear it! Over the years I have had numerous earphones and they all had the same annoying problem; the cable was always in the way, not long enough and always tangled up. When wireless sets came out it solved a lot of them issues but there was still a cable between the two earbuds. This year, truly wireless earbuds are the must have accessory – no cable between the two earbuds or to the streaming device!
I have been a big fan of Edifier for years, I love the quality, sound and style of their speakers. So I was delighted when I received a pair of their TWS1 Truly Wireless Stereo Earbuds to review. They are available in 2 colour options, black or white, and I received the white set to review.
There are lots of wireless earbuds on the market today and I have tried different sets. The TWS1 could be considered to be more at the budget end of the market, but the price tag belies their quality.
So, what’s in the box?
- 2x earbuds (left and right ear)
- 3x silicone earmuffs (small, medium and large)
- 1x USB charging cable
- 1x Charging case
The Edifier TWS1 earbuds are a set of 2 IPX5 rated (splash and sweatproof) wireless earbuds that use Bluetooth 5.0. They have an impressive 8 hours of playback with a charging time of 1.5 hours and the small portable charging case holds another 24 hours of charge, giving a total playback time of 32 hours from a single charge of the case. The effective range between them and your phone or tablet is 10 metres (approx. 30 feet). This makes them perfect for listening to your mobile devices without the need to find charging points.
They feature Qualcomm TrueWireless (™) Stereo Plus technology that allows you to pair both earbuds simultaneously, but you can also switch to a mono mode so that you can use just one earbud without losing sound channels (quite a handy safety feature if walking down busy streets so that you can still hear noises around you).
Out of the box, setting them up is fairly straightforward. Once removed from the charging case they automatically turn on (if not in the case just press and hold the touch control). Initially my phone would not see them. Whilst they turned on and paired to each other when first removed from their charging case, they would not be picked up by my phone. This was simple to rectify by pressing and holding the touch control on one of the earbuds for a few seconds until the LED light flashed blue/red and then I could easily pair on my phone.
Now, I have trouble with some earbuds. Some fit, some don’t – even by changing the earmuffs for a different size. The TWS1 fitted in my ears straight out of the box with the small earmuffs fitted and felt really comfortable (as I was on my way out at the time, they stayed in for about 50 minutes and never felt uncomfortable).
Once paired with the phone you are ready to start listening to whatever your favourite music, watch your tv show or make hands free phone calls. Controlling them is easy as they feature touch control to pause or play (one click), select next track (double click) or to select previous track (triple click). To answer a call is a single click, to end a call a single click and to reject a call just press and hold. There is no volume control on them, this is controlled by your phone or tablet.
Overall, I really do like these earbuds. The in-ear earbuds have an ergonomic design with touch controls that are very comfortable to wear and easy to use. Whilst they are at the budget end of the market, the sound is crystal clear on music playback and making phone calls (the cVc noise reduction for crystal clear calling does seem to work). It would have been nice to control the volume from the earbud itself rather than the phone, but that isn’t a big problem. The charging time is quick, the playback time is a decent amount, and the additional 24 hours in the small charging case is excellent (they start to charge as soon as placed back in the charging case).
I love that they turn on automatically when removed from the case and shut off when placed back in. The charging case also holds the earbuds in using magnets, so you don’t have to worry about them dropping out if the lid happens to open.
They are also rated IPX5, so they are splash and sweatproof making them good for the gym, out running or even if caught in a rain shower.
The only small niggle I did have with them was that whilst the sound was crystal clear and delivered good quality audio, including bass, I thought that the volume could have been a little bit higher – although saying that, it was loud enough to hear the music I was playing clearly over traffic noise when walking down a busy main road, so that’s just me be a tad picky.
So for a budget pair of truly wireless stereo earbuds they do punch above their price tag and would make a perfect gift this Christmas.
I have used them a lot since receiving them. The quality is good, they are very comfortable to wear and use, battery life and charging time is excellent, the sound quality is very good, and the £45 price tag makes them a bargain.
