Caring for a baby is one of the most wonderful and stressful things I have ever done. Don’t get me wrong I love little kids, in fact I choose to look after them daily, but my gosh it can be hard work.

So let’s talk weaning. It is exciting when a baby is ready for moving on to the next stage of their development and much as I enjoyed feeding my baby milk I really loved the weaning stage. So when I was asked to test the Eco Rascals Natural Bamboo tableware I was really pleased. I love the aesthetic of the Eco Rascals products, but I hate style over substance, so I got my 6 month old Nephew to put it through it’s paces and here is what I found.

The set came in cardboard packaging with paper packing material so it was really easy to pop in the recycling bin once opened. The Eco Rascals products are produced from Organic Bamboo. The products are recyclable, biodegradable, grown and harvested without the use of pesticides. The silicone elements are made from food grade material which is free of plastic, BPA, PVC, lead and phthalates. The box had really easy care instructions which hopefully will help my set last as long as possible. Speaking of sets, I received the Ladybird design bamboo plate, a bamboo bowl, a bamboo beaker and a bamboo spoon. The plate had a nice weight to it, was really smooth and contained 2 sections. One large and one smaller, absolutely perfect for fruit for dipping in yoghurt, crudités and dip, pasta and sauce. Worried about the mess? The plate has a suction ring underneath which means no plate throwing. The plates are available in a selection of styles including an elephant, car, dinosaur, duck and others. And they are available in sets or individually.

The bowl is really lovely, well balanced, not too deep so baby can see what they are eating. The bowl also has a suction cup so can be sure to stay put whilst baby is eating. Both the suction cups from the bowl and plate can be removed for cleaning. This worried me a bit, I assumed that as they could be removed then they would come away if baby pulled the bowl or plate around. I suctioned them to the high chair and I’m not kidding I could not move them a millimeter no matter how hard I pulled. The suction stayed put, did not shift and did not come away from the base. Absolutely brilliant!

The beaker I received was a good size for small hands, what I love about the bamboo is that it’s solid but not too heavy. The lid it has is silicone and soft to touch, it stops major spills but isn’t totally spill proof as it is free flow. This is not a bad thing though, it encourages your child to sip rather than suck like they would with a bottle. It also helps promote jaw muscle development which is great as you child needs to gain these muscles for chewing. A free flow cup also helps prevent drinks pooling around the upper teeth and helps your child practice fine motor skills. The spoon included in the set has a bamboo handle and silicone head, matches the set beautifully and is easy to take apart and clean.

As a weaning set I don’t think it could be any better, and the great thing is it does grow with your child, once they are ready, you can remove the suction rings should you wish, you can remove the silicone lid from the beaker so it becomes the next stage open cup. The set is really aesthetically pleasing, exceptional quality and is definitely stylish but does exactly what you want it to do. Making mealtimes less stressful, more fun, and because you don’t have to worry so much about mess you can focus on making the mealtime a happy, stress free occasion. Perfect for babies first Christmas, this would be high on my present list for anyone looking for a gift for a little one.
