Earnley Butterflies, Birds and Beasts 2018 Review

Reviewed by Helen Warner

My husband and I decided to visit Earnley Butterflies, Birds and Beasts with our two children age 8 and 11. It was easy to find and the carpark had plenty of spaces for free parking. It is the summer holidays and we went on a Sunday so I expected it to be very busy, but it wasn’t. This meant we could walk around at our own pace and it was nice and peaceful. At the entrance we got our tickets and the children were given a little quiz sheet of things to find to win a balloon at the end. We also paid extra for some animal food.

The butterfly enclosure was a good size and had plenty of butterflies, there were many different varieties. It would have been good to have more information around about the butterflies but we enjoyed sitting in there and the butterflies did land on us which the children loved. In the bird enclosure it was nice to have the birds free flying around us and there was plenty to read about them, we sat in there for a while watching the birds and listening to their calls.

The rest of the animals included rabbits, guinea pigs, chipmunks, reptiles, tortoises, terrapins, owls, chickens, guinea fowl and donkeys. It was nice to walk around looking at all the animals and feeding some of them. Some areas could do with tidying up a bit as it was a bit worn and shabby in places. There was crazy golf available for an additional £2 per person but we did not play this. In the cafe the food choices were very limited so probably best to bring a packed lunch.

The highlight for my husband and I was the nostalgia museum, it was much bigger inside than I thought and so much to see, it was lovely to show the children things from the past and they enjoyed it too.

We had a good time visiting however we did feel it was a little expensive as we managed to only spend about two hours there even though we didn’t rush. Having said that the fees obviously cover the care and feed for the animals. I probably wouldn’t return soon because it’s quite small but would recommend it to others for a nice afternoon out.

Rating: 4/5

Tickets cost £9.50 (adults) / £7 (children)
