We are quite a food focused family but every one of us has quite different tastes, particularly at breakfast, which makes creating interesting meals quite challenging at times. We were therefore really quite excited to get the opportunity to try out the Drew & Cole breakfast sandwich maker, which purports to let you “Make the world’s famous Egg Muffin at home!”, and make healthier versions of fast food favourites. We have a bit of a love/hate relationship with **-you-know-what food, (editor’s note – brand name removed) and on occasion it’s nice to get something from there but usually we will only get ourselves any breakfast items when we’re travelling, which is rarely! So having a bit of equipment at home that can recreate the famous breakfast sandwich was quite enticing.

When I opened the box, it was even more compact in real life than I expected, standing at 14cm high, 16cm wide, and 18.5cm deep. There isn’t any need to build it, as it comes ready to plug in and go, which is always a bonus with a new appliance. The lead is 57cm long so has a reasonable amount of reach too. It is shiny black on the outside, and the inner workings are black non-stick material. The unit is circular, and essentially made up of layers which you can fit the different parts of your sandwiches in.

It’s really easy to use too. We tried an English muffin to start off with, slicing it in half. Firstly you have to pre-heat the sandwich maker which probably takes around 5 minutes, and you can see when it’s done as a green light comes on. You then place the bottom part of the muffin, cut side up, in the bottom ring, place slices of cheese on the top, then lower the next part which is where you cook the egg. You need to add a little oil to this section so the egg doesn’t stick, then crack it straight in and poke the yolk with a fork which I think is to stop it popping when it cooks. You then put the top half of the muffin on and close the lid, letting it cook for around 5 minutes. Once your time is up, you slide the plate out from under the end, and then you can lift the sandwich out and enjoy! We would have added in some other fillings but we didn’t have anything else suitable on hand and we just wanted to try it. It came out really well, looking very much like the sandwich it is trying to imitate.

We have tried some other options but found that while you can use bread in it, you have to cut circles out which is a bit wasteful unless you have a plan for the leftover bread. I also tried using a bagel however I found they were a little too big to easily fit into the unit. The best thing we found was a normal English muffin which is quite versatile. My favourite so far has been a smoked salmon, cream cheese and egg sandwich which was a great breakfast before work!

The unit is also really easy to clean. You can take out the ring sections without much effort and either hand wash or put in the dishwasher, and the actual unit can be wiped down. As it is so small it’s easy to store and pull out when you want to use it.

Drew and Cole provide an app which gives you lots of free recipes to try too. We weren’t able to pick our device from a list but it was easy enough to filter the recipes by “sandwich” instead, and get some inspiration. My 12 year old can get a bit stuck about what to have to eat sometimes, but they absolutely love this bit of kit and worked out how to use it themselves very quickly! We would very much recommend this, and not just for breakfast as you can even make things like mini pizzas and omelettes in it.

Overall this is a great little device to bring a bit of variety to breakfast time, and would be a great addition if you are looking at making over your kitchen as it is compact and looks smart out on the counter.
