Double Feature at the King’s Theatre Edinburgh Review

Double Feature, taking place in King’s Theatre in Edinburgh, stars Grant Stott (former Forth One Radio DJ) and Andy Gray (BBC Radio Scotland presenter) as two long-time pals, hired to clear out their old favourite haunt, The Regal Cinema. Having spent what appears to be a fair amount of time in the cinema in the past, the two friends discuss their favourite films, all the while acting out their favourite scenes, from James Bond to Jaws. They wind each other up something rotten, all in good fun, as they reminisce about the ‘good old days’. From the emotive scenes on stage, along with the rest of the audience, I was swept up in the nostalgia of the golden age of cinema.

Written by ‘Only an Excuse’s Phil Differ, this play is, for the most part, warm and funny, however with an unexpected ending (without giving too much away!). The actors worked well together, and easily bounced off one another. There was even a little break in character when Gray imitated Sammy Davis Jnr – it had the whole audience (and Gray) laughing!

The stage itself was simple but true to the story, with old fashioned movie posters on the back wall, film reels strewn across the stage, and an old projector sitting pride of place (it was put to good use during the ‘Godfather’ re-enactment – which did require some audience participation!!).

At only 55 mins long, it was an enjoyable hour of theatre – as nostalgic as it was amusing.

The Victorian King’s Theatre in Edinburgh is located on Leven Street, in the trendy Tollcross area with bars and restaurants a plenty nearby, making for an excellent evening out. Close to train and bus transport links, and with free on street parking after 6.30pm, it’s easily accessible from all areas of the city.
