Roller skates to me conjure up so many happy, carefree childhood memories. It was a rite of passage to master the bike, the scooter and then the skates. So when I got a chance to review the Xootz Skates for kids I was secretly so excited for my 6 year old daughter to give them a try. That said, I was a little nervous for her. This would be her first attempt at skating and I would have to dig deep and tap into my distant memories to give her help and advice to smooth the process; and in all fairness she isn’t the most graceful of creatures.

When the skates arrived though, it didn’t take me long to join in her squeals at the sight of the colourful box that outlined the key features of the skates. The skates were inline style skates with four wheels with the stopper at the back. These were for age 5 upwards and size 9-12, which is adjustable. These would be the perfect introduction for any child to the exciting new possibilities and happy times that skating would bring. We opened the box to examine the skates more closely. They looked great, with bright pink and turquoise colouring that are very appealing and eye catching – especially to a 6 year old. Much brighter and more interesting than the designs I remember from my youth!

My daughter has very slim legs and ankles and so I was pleased to see that there were a couple features which would help her to secure the boots well- a priority for safe skating. Firstly there is a inner padded boot that separates from the outer plastic casing, this help with comfort and to give flexibility as feet grow. Secondly the outer casing features adjustable straps which have a really great tightening mechanism that pinch in and tighten the inner boot if needed and secure the whole boot around the ankle. This double-boot design also made putting them on and off much easier. I also have memories of battling for ages with my boots when I was little but these were quite simple for me to assist with.

Once they were on we had a bit of a cautious practice in the living room, moved onto the hard floor of the kitchen and eventually ventured out to the pathway to try them out in the really world. They were fantastic and my daughter had great fun. Holding on tightly we guided her until she had the courage to roll on alone. She’s been out on them a number of times since and is loving her new ‘hobby’.

As a mum and ex ‘skater girl’ I absolutely love these skates. The design is spot on and fresh for the younger generation and they are so easy to secure safely. They are a great quality and sturdy enough for repeated ventures out into the street.

Rating:  I give these a 5/5 and think they would make a perfect gift for any child wanting to learn to skate and would be a great idea for a Christmas gift. I will definitely be recommending them.

They can be purchased for £29.99 on Amazon here.
