Now, I’m by no means someone who regularly enjoys hiking but I do like a sturdy pair of walking boots for walking dogs or just going out and about when I need to wear something more robust than trainers, or safer than wellies.  I was therefore very pleased to receive a pair of Helly Hansen’s Montragon HT trekking boots, which are from the newly engineered and expanded footwear collection.  The Montragon boots are technically designed for longer treks, backpacks and hikes, and have arch brace plates for great support of the arch of the foot.  They also are designed to have the right level of stiffness to support the ability to wear heavier packs and clamber over rocks, with the boot’s performance still holding up to standard.  The boot is also designed to be slightly taller to give greater ankle protection.

Some other features of these boots are that they are made from partially recycled materials, and feature both the Helly Hansen Quick Dry and Seam-Shield technologies, meaning your feet stay dry and comfortable no matter how wet the weather gets.  They also have comfort insoles for greater cushioning, strong toe and heel caps for added protection, and max-grip rubber compound on the sole for greater traction.  I was pleased to also read that the insoles are treated to present odour too.

I gave these boots a full and lengthy day test, as we had planned a trip to London.  We ended up walking almost 9 miles that day, wandering around places like Camden and Chinatown, with the weather being both west and dry.  They were tested out on a lot of stairs and escalators, on the hot underground several times, and just tramping up and down the London streets, walking through puddles.  While I wasn’t carrying around a super heavy camping pack, I was carrying around various bags of shopping!  I laced them up once around 7am at the beginning of the day and didn’t have to re-tie them once.  They were still just as firmly tied at 10pm when we got home again at the end of the day, which is partly due to the engineered boot loops which help hold the laces firmly in place.  The boots were comfortable all day, or at least as comfortable as any boot can be when you’ve been walking for 9 miles!  I didn’t really have to think about them much as they did their job all day, supporting my arches and ankles, and giving me good grip on the stairs and pavements where I needed it.

They are definitely waterproof but equally my feet did not sweat having worn them for over 12 hours in the day.  They come in a dark grey colour and are a good looking boot.  I wore them with jeans and didn’t get any weird looks, so you can easily wear these as part your day to day boots if you wanted, as well as with full hiking gear.  Unlike some other boots I have tried, they are easy to get on and off, as they have robust loops on the back and tongue to help you.

Overall these are great boots to add to your collection, whether you are an avid hiker or just a general dog walker. They would make a great Christmas present for anyone who meets those criteria and wants to have a great piece of well engineered kit.
