Dear Boy by Emily Berry Review

Reviewed by Meresa Bergin

As I enjoy poetry, both writing and reading, I was excited to be picked to review Dear Boy by Emily Berry.

The simple cover stood out to me, a lot of poetry books are presented with art work that has little to do with the book, or takes away from the work I find. Having never read anything by Emily Berry I had no idea what the book would be like, the title suggested an essence of love.

But this not your typical book of love poems, whilst you could feel that surge of feeling in the poems. At times it was dark and bitter, then witty and catty, I felt I could relate to what was written.

I very much enjoyed the first poem Our Love Could Spoil Dinner, it left me wanting more both from the writer in terms of reading the book and from that poem, I felt it would make an interesting small story. The House By The Railroad was incredible, filled with darkness almost like a ghost story but also filled with such pain and need. I felt I could relate to the words and it left its mark on me

Reading this book very quickly I found myself returning to parts of it again and again, finding something new as I am sure I will continue to do over time.

I found this book interesting, engaging and different to the numbers of poetry books I have read in the past. It is easy to relate to if you are new to poetry, parts of it read like a story and for those more knowing of poetry I feel you will find something new and refreshing here. I look forward to reading more by Emily Berry.
