It was with nervous apprehension that I agreed to go and review Daytona Karting in Trafford Park, Manchester. Anyone who knows me will verify that I am not a big fan of any kind of motorsport! But after the open session that myself and my mate Mark attended I am now converted!
It was brilliant from start to finish and I recommend it to everyone! The whole experience is excellent and all the staff make you feel very welcome no matter what level of driving you are at. When you arrive you register all your details online with the PC’s provided and then you go and suit up.
Next it is the safety demonstration that everyone must view otherwise you will not be allowed to proceed with the karting. This involves viewing a DVD hosted by Martin Brundle. Being a complete novice, this DVD is invaluable as it guides you through all the safety features of the venue and even how to get into the kart properly!
On our day there were 31 drivers of varying expertise. I knew I would find it not so difficult to end up with the wooden spoon and I was not disappointed! Everyone crowded around the notice board to find out what race numbers they were in and then the racing began!
We watched the first race from the balcony and then the announcement came to make our way to the pits to get ready for our first race. Picking out the right size helmet was my first challenge as I had not done this before and I managed to pick one that was 2 sizes too big for me and this is my excuse as to why I finished last!
As we waited in the pit lane to take the short trip to the starting grid you could feel the adrenalin rising and the unnatural urge to sing the F1 theme that was stolen from a Fleetwood Mac song! The next challenge was to get to the starting grid without overshooting it and looking like a complete fool! I just about managed it and then the pulse got quicker as I waited for the green lights and then we're off!
The race was a mixture of adrenalin and bad language on my part! I kept spinning off and managed to finish last but my mate Mark was keeping our flag flying and he finished third! This was repeated in the next race but having the right size helmet this time I managed to not finish last.
Even though my driving was erratic to say the least I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Some people were taking it a bit too seriously but I suppose that can't be helped with everyone's competitive nature! The racing carried on and to my surprise I managed to qualify for the semi-finals. This race was longer than the other qualifying heats and with no great shock I made last place my very own!
We watched the final with great interest as the better drivers battled to win the trophies for the top 3. Then unfortunately the session was over. When I got home all my race times and average laptimes were e mailed to me which made for interesting reading as I might have walked the laps quicker!
Daytona Karting is excellent and I would recommend it to anyone. In fact I have already recommended it to all my mates and some work colleagues and I cannot wait to go karting again very soon!
