I have been to The Crows Nest Beefeater in Tring on many occasions and it is always a good choice for a good meal with plenty of choice and not too expensive. The inside has been refurbished in recent years and it is clean and pleasantly modern looking in decor with good old fashioned solid tables and chairs, very comfortable.

We all know what to expect from a Beefeater but I must say that the service from our waiter Jason was exceptional and above and beyond what I have come to expect. He was friendly and helpful, he knew the answers to all of our weird 'can you take the mushrooms out of this' type questions and kept a really attentive eye on us – bearing in mind we were a table of 13 there were a good number of people to keep happy! Everything we asked for was brought over immediately and he deserves a pay rise for truly excellent service.

Unfortunately the food was very slow in coming once ordered. We waited for an hour and ten minutes from finishing our starters to being brought our main course, and we had ordered it before we were served our starters. Really no matter how big the table/how many other large tables there are this is not acceptable.

The food in general was very nice, the starters were very good sizes and everyone really enjoyed them. The main courses too were very nice, the only complain was in reference to a steak which was requested as medium rare but arrived very well done to the disappointment of the person who had ordered it. Puddings were in general ok, but I have to comment on the ice cream. I accept that a Beefeater is not The Ritz and I accept that 'whippy' ice cream is fine for a child's desert. But I do not think that it is acceptable on an adult pudding. I had chosen my warm chocolate brownie before I chose my main course to allow space for it! Disappointed is not the word. By the time it had made its way from the kitchen the ice cream (which was placed directly on the plate next to the warm brownie) had melted to the point that my brownie was now swimming in what could only be described in places as milk. Not nice at all. The person who chose the lemon meringue sundae also asked me to point out that next time she would appreciate more than one tiny piece of meringue in the pudding.

It was most certainly the pleasant interior and fabulous service that made this meal enjoyable, unfortunately the food let it down in places.
