What a fantastic restaurant! I can thoroughly recommend Côte in St Albans.
Côte St Albans is on the corner of St Albans High Street and Holywell Hill, very close to St Albans Abbey. It is a French style restaurant in a large spacious building which was once the home of Barclays Bank. There was no overcrowding, the tables were well spaced out and there was plenty of room to move around.
Côte Restaurant prides itself on providing authentic French classic dishes, freshly cooked to order. Their inspiration comes from the many bistros of Paris using high quality produce at reasonable prices.
Sunday morning we arrived slightly before 12 noon to restaurant full of guests enjoying a late breakfast. Even those who arrived just before the 12 noon deadline were given the choice of breakfast or lunch.
The menu was extensive with main meals starting at only £9.95. What to choose? There were so many different dishes on the menu. For starters my husband went for soup, whilst we chose freshly baked sourdough baguette with butter. As the bread is baked fresh on the premises, and our choice of bread was not quite ready when my husband’s soup was ready to be served, we were given an alternative to save us waiting.
For my main meal I chose a 7oz fillet steak, medium, my personal favourite with peppercorn sauce, whilst my daughter chose a 10oz Sirloin steak, also medium. These were served with frites and a watercress garnish. There was also an optional choice of vegetables, salads, butters or sauces at an extra charge.
My husband chose roasted duck breast (served pink) with gratin potato and a griottine cherry sauce, whilst my granddaughter chose cod goujons with frites, she wasn’t keen on peas so they offered her carrots or French beans instead. Nothing was too much trouble!
Our steaks were delicious, as were the frites which were served in a little pot making the meal look very attractive, the steaks were both so tender. My husband was really enthusiastic about his duck breast with gratin potato. The cod goujons, frites and carrots disappeared very quickly! Everyone enjoyed their meals and there were no complaints about anything.
We chose from the A La Carte Menu, but they also gave us a Specials menu, even though it was a Sunday.
We were all too full for a dessert so decided to go without which was a shame as there was a large choice including all the French favourites. Chocolate Fondant or Mousse, Tarte Fine aux Pommes, Crème Caramel, Crêpe Chantilly, Iced Berries with White Chocolate Sauce, Crème Brûlée, Ice Creams & Sorbets or Cheese. Why did I eat so much of the bread for my starter?
All in all we really enjoyed our meals at Côte and can’t wait to go back there another day to try breakfast.
The meals were very reasonably priced, water and glasses were put on the table without us having to ask in addition to our chosen drinks, the service couldn’t be faulted.
I can thoroughly recommend Côte Restaurant St Albans, there was nothing at all that we did not like.
I would give it 6/5 if I could!!!
