Cliff Richard, the living legend, graced the Symphony Hall in Birmingham last night with his presence for the opening night of his magnificent 75th Birthday Tour. Unsurprisingly the crowd were eager for Sir Cliff to come onto the stage and welcomed him with a standing ovation, the star was visibly moved by the gesture and spent a while thanking fans for their warm welcome. The 75 year old star wore a snazzy but smart outfit which caught the light beautifully and as he danced and moved created a shimmery glow around him.
He opened with a new track – Golden – which was followed by another standing ovation, and then he shook and danced around the stage to Rock N Roll Juvenile. Covering legendary tracks by Chuck Berry, Elvis and Buddy Holly, Sir Cliff was everything we had expected from a man who has lived the pop idol lifestyle, he knew exactly how to get crowd going. In addition to the famous covers I just loved the mix of old and new songs. There wasn’t an empty seat in the house until, that is, everyone got up to dance.
The lighting, the stage, the 9 piece band all added to the fantastic atmosphere with the Symphony Hall being the perfect location with its comfortable surroundings and friendly staff. Sir Cliff was in his element, as was the crowd. The sound was perfect, nothing was too loud and the melodious voice of the man himself was
The highlights for me included the guitarists dancing away with Sir Cliff, and the 20 minute medley provided the prefect opportunity to get up and shake your booty. Sir Cliff was exactly as I expected, so friendly and it felt like he was talking to everyone individually. His chatting between songs made him come across as approachable and “normal” despite his Godlike status.
I would absolutely recommend everyone see Sir Cliff on tour. It was absolutely brilliant. Five stars from me!
