As an aromatherapist, I love working with essential oils, creating my own blends and discovering what works best, and I must admit that Four Thieves Oil is amazing.

I wanted to do a bit of research into the company and oil as I’d never heard of them before. Below is some information taken from their website to give you some background information about them.

The history of the Four Thieves Oils
Sometimes the history of the discovery of some inventions is as interesting as their benefits. The Four Thieves Oils is one of them.

At the time of the infamous Bubonic Plague (aka The Black Death) in 15th-century France, four former perfume & spice merchants who were without a source of income at the time, commit robbery, stealing from the sick and dying without contracting the deathly disease. They are caught and brought before the court for their crime. The judges are so intrigued by how these men had stayed immune to this terrible disease that they are given an ultimatum: if they share the secret of their good health, they would be spared punishment. It turned out that the Thieves had prepared an essential oil recipe that when applied to their hands, ears, feet and the areas over their mouths and noses, it kept them safe from infection.

And that’s how the world discovered the recipe known henceforth under the name “Four Thieves Oils” that has been perfected in the 21st century by us at Optima Natura.

The packaging and bottle both have a stunning spa-like look, which is very stylish and inviting.

Upon opening the bottle, the aroma is gorgeous, warm with a hint of spice, combined with the clean, fresh scent of eucalyptus and the delightful citrus aroma of lemon. The combination of all the oils is both uplifting and relaxing, a perfect combination for use in a bath, diffuser, massage or an oil burner. You can also add a few drops to water when cleaning floors, worktops, and generally around the home.

The blend of oils gives a lovely herbal feeling as opposed to floral. In a bath, the clove and cinnamon gives you that warm cosy feeling, whilst the lemon, eucalyptus and rosemary lifts you up without over-stimulating. The clove and cinnamon works well with them leaving you relaxed at the same time.

The longevity is very impressive and varies depending on how you use it. In the home for cleaning, the aroma lasted a good few hours. Used in a plug-in diffuser, it lasted a go 5hrs. When used in the bath, the bathroom was left with a beautiful aroma that lasted a good 6 hours. With the door being kept shut, it meant the aroma lasted longer. It was used for massage and it was heaven. I had the massage in the evening and left it on overnight. I woke up and still had the scent of the oils, it was lovely.

Overall, I’m really impressed and it is a great product for many uses. It works particularly well a gift just because or even for Mother’s Day.

Please note, that depending on the use of the oil, will depend on what you will need to follow the guidelines, i.e., if using it for massage, you will need to use a carrier oil. If using in the bath or in a diffuser, you will need to make sure you have the correct amount of water.

There are guidelines within the product information on the website that will guide you, please ensure you follow them.

Another important note to mention is animals, especially cats and dogs. As an aromatherapist, I wouldn’t advise using this where there are animals, so I wouldn’t use it for household cleaning, diffusers or oil burners. Ensure the product is stored in a cool, dark place and not in direct sunlight.
