The Changeling

The Changeling
by Thomas Middleton and William Rowley
Directed by 2008 JMK Award Winner Michael Oakley
Designed by Fontini Dimou
Southwark Playhouse, 3rd to 26th November 2011

Michael Oakley remains one of the few young directors attempting classic texts. Combining multimedia elements which were workshopped at Bristol Old Vic, The Changeling is his first production since his JMK Award winning Edward II at BAC, in 2008.

Considered to be Middleton and Rowley's finest collaboration, the tragedy explores how the power of lust and love can change people until they are unrecognizable to who they once were.  The Changeling follows Beatrice-Joanna’s complicated love triangle in a story of lust, prejudice, and lies. As the beautiful Beatrice desperately sorts out her affair with Alonzo and Alsemero, she seeks help in De Flores, the disfigured servant who loves her.

Director Michael Oakley won the James Menzies Kitchin Award for theatre directors in 2008 with a critically acclaimed staging of Marlowe’s Edward II and continues his dedication to classic texts here.  After working as trainee director in residence at Chichester Festival Theatre, he became associate director on Trevor Nunn’s Theatre Royal Haymarket production of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead.

The production is designed by Fontini Dimou, costume designer on NT’s Fram, Gethsemane, Therese Raquin and The Seagull and RSC’s Julius Caesar, The Crucible, The Duchess of Malfi.  Sound and composition is by James Flockton, (who recently worked on Fewer Emergencies at the Print Room’s Devils Festival).

David Caves recently appeared as McHeath in The Beggar’s Opera (Open Air Theatre, Regent’s Park) and is soon to appear as Petruchio in The Taming of the Shrew (RSC), both directed by Lucy Bailey. His work with Cheek By Jowl includes Macbeth, Cymbeline and Troilus and Cressida.

James Northcote recently appeared in Trevor Nunn’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead.
