Fancy a simple but effective way to spend more time together as a family, and get the kids away from their screens (maybe the adults too)? Then Cheatwell’s Host Your Own Family Quiz Night game is definitely for you! Designed as a game that is all-inclusive and for everyone to join in the fun, Family Quiz Night is for 2-8 players and ages 8+. The premise is simple; the first person to get to the finish square wins. To do that, you take turns in asking and answering questions. And there are 1200 questions included across 8 different subjects so you won’t run out of questions for a very long time! The subjects are TV, Movies, Geography, History, Music, Pot Luck, Science & Nature, and People.
The game play is on a square board, with a spiral of squares containing the different subjects. The first person to go rolls (the youngest!), then answers a question for the subject they land on. If they get it right then they can roll again and move forward to the next subject square. Play then passes to the next person who rolls, answers a question, and rolls again if they get the answer right. When asking the questions, there are simple ones designed for kids, with multiple choice answers, and harder ones designed for adults, with just one answer. We found however that sometimes the kid questions were harder than the adult ones!

We were playing as a family of two adults and two children, and decided eventually that the question asker would decide which question to ask, depending on whether they thought the person answering would know or not, as there were some really tough questions included. Occasionally we would not give the multiple choice answers if that meant the question might be too easy, so we had some options of different gameplay to work with. That seemed to work better, as some of us were getting a bit stuck behind the others when we couldn’t answer a run of questions! You can get stuck on one topic occasionally, so it’s good to rely on the goodwill of the question master to help you out.
You could play this game in teams or as individuals like we did. We did find after a while that it felt like it dragged on a bit, but nonetheless we did enjoy ourselves and had fun racking our brains for the answers to the questions posed. Host Your Own Family Quiz Night is a simple but fun game that can keep you occupied for an hour or two. We did get a little confused with how you played after the first turn, which was to answer a question first and roll afterwards if you got it right, but you then didn’t answer another question until your next go. That kept tripping us up a bit as it isn’t the standard gameplay of roll first.
It is a well made game with a good quality board and question cards, so will last you a long time. It works well for both adults and kids plus teens, and would be a good addition to the family games collection for Christmas, when you’re looking for something not too taxing to learn, to play on Christmas day evening!
