Miles Kelly Discover the Savage World Review

Reviewed by David Savage
Discover the Savage World from Miles Kelly and the Discovery Channel is a wonderful educational, fun filled book full of hundreds of facts about our planet.
This hard backed book is split into 6 sections:
Earth’s Power: this section covers everything from volcanoes, tsunami’s, typhoons and hurricanes to the Storm of the Century.
Deadly Nature: this section covers deadly animals from the sea, land and the skies and their deadly killing power and feuds (my favourite section).
Wild Science: this section cover the world of science from chemicals, speeding bullets to the birth of stars.
Tough Machines: this section covers some of the world’s biggest and toughest machinery from earth movers, drilling machines to robots and space vehicles.
Harsh Lands: this section covers some of the Earth’s harshest environments from freezing cold ice to boiling hot deserts, jungles and swaps and how people have adapted to survive in these conditions.
Brutal Battles: this last section covers brutal battles and wars some involving bravery to violence.
Overall, this is a brilliant book to have on your bookshelf. Not only is it educational it is also fun to read, whether it be from cover to cover or flicking through the different sections. Each section has been split into different topics and is written in short paragraphs so should keep children’s interest. Along with all the hundreds of interesting facts from the brutal nature of our planet it is also filled with lots of interesting pictures.
A great book to help with school work or just for expanding your knowledge.
The only possible downside I could possibly see is at first glance you may think the £20 price tag (currently £15 if you buy it from the Miles Kelly website) is a bit too much but when you consider the educational value and the 224 pages it contains full of hundreds of interesting facts it is definitely value for money and would be money well spent.
A brilliant educational tool with something for everyone whether your interest lies in nature, science, battles and wars or man-made machinery that changes the world.
I have to give this book 5 out of 5 for its educational value and how it easy it is to read. There is plenty to learn, and I did, with facts about the Giant Vinegaroon – a cross between a spider and a scorpion – to what caused the 2011 Japenese Tsunami and hundreds more.
This would make an excellent gift for any child (age 9 years +).
