I was given the opportunity to review the Brio Builder Construction Set and although I had never heard of this company before, I thought the set looked like a great educational (as well as fun!) addition to my daughter’s toy collection.

Toys are a great source of entertainment for children (and for some parents too!). I’m sure we all have fond memories of specific toys that we cherished and loved from our childhood. I spent many a happy hour playing with Lego and Mechano so when I saw this construction set, it immediately brought a smile to my face and I knew that if my daughter didn’t enjoy playing with it, then I certainly would!

The Brio Builder Construction Set has an age of 3+ years on it due to the small parts which could be a choking hazard, and this is clearly stated on the box. The packaging also states that the set contains 136 pieces. On the reverse of the box, the type and quantity of each building piece/ tool contained within the set is displayed.

The pieces in the set are made of both plastic and wood. Inside the box you find tools such as hammers, spanners, screwdrivers and wrenches. There are multiple, various sized and shaped blocks which act as the key building/ main frame components. Bolts, screws, wheels and various other elements then bring your child’s construction ideas to life!

The boxing shows pictures of some of the creations that can be made using the pieces within the set. Inside the packaging, there is also a leaflet which shows some examples of things that can be built using the set along with a breakdown of the parts, and the quantity of those parts, needed to build that specific item. Alternatively, you can let your little one’s imagination run wild and see what creations they can come up with.

As a parent, I am conscious that I want my child to grow and develop both physically and mentally, and to their full potential too. Toys are a valuable asset to help assist us with this, so whenever there is an opportunity for my daughter to have fun, but to also learn at the same time, then this makes me a very happy Mummy! Children often don’t realise that they are learning whilst playing with toys.

This construction set offers a huge educational aspect to ‘playtime.’ Not only does it allow a child to use their imagination and bring ideas to life, they will face challenges and problems with their build, which means they will need to work their way through the problems faced to over come them. This helps a child with both methodical and logical thinking. It may also assist with the concept of planning and ‘thinking ahead.’

With the Brio Builder Construction Set being targeted at children aged 3+ years, this is a key pivotal time in their development whereby a child’s hand and eye co-ordination is starting to improve. Using a screwdriver to tighten up a screw will aid fine motor control of their little hands/ fingers and increase dexterity, which in turn will help with skills in other areas i.e. learning to hold a pen and write.

Don’t let the target age totally put you off, this set could still continue to be utilised by older children and will keep them entertained for a while.

When I visited the Brio website,(www.brio.co.uk) I found that the company does a range of children’s toys including train sets and ride on walkers to name a couple. The website shows that there are also other sets that can be purchased within the ‘Builders Construction’ range of products. In the starter set, there is a cute little plastic toolbox where you can store all the pieces of the tool kit.

The website provides details of both high street shops and online stores where all the Brio products can get purchased from. It’s just a shame that you can buy directly from the Brio website itself and you can’t see what the RRP for the product is.

With Science week around the corner, this would be the perfect excuse to treat your little one to an experience of both building and construction, using their ideas and imaginations to design and create their own engineering masterpiece!  Alternatively, this would also make for a lovely birthday or Christmas present too!
