When I first found out I was being sent an ice cream (gelato) cake by post I was intrigued to see how it would get from London to the north of England without thawing Turned out it was no problem at all, my cake arrived in perfect condition. It was in a large cardboard box than was lined with thick insulating material and two packs of dry ice surrounded the polystyrene cake box which opened to reveal the cake.
All the packaging is made of recycled, biodegradable or compostable materials. I am a big fan of gelato. It contains more milk and less cream than the traditional English ice cream and has less fat so although I’m not sure if there’s a difference in calories, I like to think to myself that I’m having the healthy option, plus I prefer the silkier texture. Add that to a cake and it couldn’t get any better in my opinion.
The cake I was lucky enough to receive was the “white chocolate gelato flower cake “ in the shape of a flower. This is vanilla gelato layered with sponge cake, covered with white chocolate sauce and decorated with colourful little flowers. It looked so pretty.
Surprise your mother on Mother’s Day with something a bit different. She’d never guess what was in this box. It would make such a lovely change from the usual flowers or chocolates.
My cake was covered in a bit of frost when unpacked so I used all my will power and left it for about half an hour at room temperature before cutting into it, and it was delicious, perfect for those like me who have a sweet tooth. The gelato had still held its dense texture but the white chocolate sauce had started to melt resulting in a beautiful blending of the gelato, sauce and sponge. This cake would serve eight. I’ve put what was left back into the freezer in polystyrene box it came in, to be enjoyed on another day. Even I with my massive sweet tooth couldn’t eat more than one piece.
I love a company with a history and this is one of those companies. Back in 1932 Idilio Badiani opened a gelateria in the centre of Florence and his gelato became famous. The company was later passed to the Pomposity family who were responsible for bringing the Badiani gelato to London in 2015.
These are proper artisan products made with the finest natural ingredients, and would make a perfect addition to any special occasion you are hosting at home, and would be sure to impress your guests.
Luckily for those of us who do not live within reach of any of the nine Badiani shops in London they have a great selection of cakes and treats to order via the online shop. Minimum order value is £35, postage is £5 or with free delivery on orders over £70.
All orders placed before 10am Tuesday to Friday will be received the next day.
The flower cake I received is priced at £45 and available from
