My children were absolutely delighted when we received the Baby Born Emma Doll. One of the Baby Born standard dolls (43cm in heigh), the doll comes in completely non plastic packaging. It took a little while for doll and all accessories to be removed from the display packaging but my children would say it was worth the wait! Luckily no batteries are required either.

This was our first Baby Born doll so we had many exciting features to discover (apparently Emma is very similar to the ‘magic’ baby born doll). My own favourite of these is the closing of the dolls eyes when the dummy is twisted, a very simple but delightful feature which really adds to the life like style of the doll to aid imaginary play for your little one. My daughter was happy with the constant undressing and redressing of the doll and it appears that many additional outfits can be bought separately and are interchangeable with other of the baby born standard dolls own outfits. My little boy loved the new features of the magic plate, where a few drops of water transforms a little plastic doll plate into a visual meal for your baby. This ‘magic’ feature also works in the potty, much to my children’s amusement! For me these water features aren’t necessary for children to develop their imaginary play and so I was also pleased how when we didn’t have water out they continued to play with these accessories just without the ‘magic’ element to them. As I am sure many parents would also wonder, I wasn’t initially sure how easy it would be to drain any water. One of the legs can be removed to enable this, and time will tell whether or not the internal parts of the doll remain in good condition and without any stains or mould. The leg is also harder than expected to rotate back into place securely, which puts me off wanting the doll to get wet too frequently.

Other features include the suitability in water generally allowing you child to actually bath their baby doll and real tears. The little accessories such as the bottle, hat, nappy, new baby card and bracelet are lovely additions and really add to the set. The sheet of stickers also an add enjoyable touch of being able to personalise some of the accessories. This doll, is clearly one of the more stereotyped gendered dolls, being very pink and whilst it certainly appealed to my daughter, my little boy was a bit put off by this. I had a quick search and other dolls in the range come in a variety of different themes and colours so hopefully there is one for everyone and a choice as to how stereotypically gendered you want your / your child’s doll to be.

My main uncertainty about this doll was the weight of it which was quite noticeable when picking it up and likely will affect how much little ones can carry it around at a time. Emma the doll does however sit in a very stable way so can be played with for hours without too much carrying about.

Whilst part of the extended Baby Born range, this set comes with 10 of its own accessories so makes a great starter set or first doll for any child. My children and I also received the Baby Born Push along Berta, a trike style push a long which paired as a perfect additional accessory for Emma the doll. This is so easy to push and steer that the weight of Emma the doll was no longer an issue.
