I have a 12 month old daughter so really excited to try new products which she might like.  I ordered the unicorn Shakie nightlight as my daughter has a love of unicorns.  The box the toy was dispatched in was a bit battered once it arrived and as the weather has been bad it was a little damp.  The box was massive compared to the small nightlight packaging.  The majority of the box contained bubble wrap which is not very environmentally friendly.

The box the toy is packaged in is quite basic but it is recyclable.  The box has various languages and English is not the primary language.  The box has also had a sticker attached which confirms the UK distributor.  The box isn’t what you would expect from a high end product.

The idea behind the Shakies product is that it is a plush toy which contains a light.  When you shake the toy the light will illuminate the toy.  The light can be programmed to stay on for either 5 seconds or 5 minutes.  The battery life according to the instruction leaflet is 700 minutes.

The light inside the toy is quite soft.  The toy itself is well made and looks cute.  It has a nice unicorn design with wings of a different material and a shiny horn.  The toy is soft to the touch.  My daughter really liked the look of it.  It does have quite large labels attached which I would suggest you remove to make the appearance better.  The toy is about the size of my hand so easy for children to hold.  Pabobo also make a sheep, seal, whale and rabbit version of the toy.

My biggest concern with the nightlight is the battery compartment.  The battery and light mechanism is stored inside the toy.  It is held in place with a simple Velcro.  In my opinion an older child, especially one who is inquisitive could open the compartment and remove the battery/light mechanism.  Although the battery and light is in a sealed unit I would still have concerns giving this to a child as it can easily be removed and end up in a small mouth.  It would be better if there was a stronger mechanism to keep the battery/light in place.

The light mechanism works well and stays on as the instructions suggest for either 5 seconds or 5 minutes after the toy has been shaken.  The battery can also be replaced once it runs out.

The unicorn Shakie is currently on sale at Amazon for £26.  I would not pay this much for this product as the quality and the design do not represent the quality I would expect for a product of this value.  The other designs are selling for between £10-£15.  Personally, I would not pay more than £10 product.

The RRP for the unicorn from Amazon is £26.
