A Guernsey Exile by Ann Carter Review

Reviewed by Louisa Nashir
I was recently asked to read this book and review it for What’s Good To Do.
My first impressions were the book was going to be difficult to get into but after a few pages the words soon began to flow.
It isn’t the type of book I would usually read as I prefer a more light-hearted story but I am glad I gave this book a go as the story was actually very good.
The book set in the 18th century follows children Thomas and Elizabeth.
Both children have hard and difficult lives, Elizabeth has no idea who her father is or if she will ever find out who he was, Thomas is treated terribly along with countless other child slaves in Guernsey.
The book sees them grow over the year and the 2 have an unbreakable bond.
This book really delves into what the life of a child slave was like and the unhappiness it caused the children.
I did enjoy the book but at times wish I hadn’t started it as I hate anything to do with children being mistreated and found some of the chapters a little upsetting and uncomfortable.
5/5 for the story but not really something I would like to read again.
