With the British winter comes the inevitable rain and, especially if you are a fan of the great outdoors like us, the need for plenty of clean and dry wet weather gear. It also creates an great opportunity for Christmas stocking filler ideas for those who also have the same problem.
The first time dragging all the gear out for the new season, or after a few wears of muddy walks and rides, I like to wash our Gore-Tex coats & waterproof trousers, especially my son’s, but with a proper machine wash I find they lose some of their waterproof properties and start leaking a bit.
That’s where Grangers come in. Grangers are one of the leading brands in waterproofing and water repellent products, with a large range for all types of outdoor gear, including outdoor clothes, so now, as the rain is setting in for winter, is the perfect opportunity to put some of their products to the test.

I was lucky enough to be sent two items to review, the Grangers Performance Wash & the corresponding Clothing Repel liquid wash. Both came in 1 litre Eco pouches have screw lids for ease of use. The Eco pouches mean no unnecessary waste, such as a big plastic bottles to go to landfill, there is actually 72% less packaging than using a traditional bottle which is outstanding.
The Performance wash is used first, you need just 25ml per wash so your pouch does 40 washes, working out circa 25 pence per wash which I think is great value. The wash is recommended for all fabrics, including Gore-Tex, as its breathable, and is so easy to use. Just add the required amount to your washing machine drawer and wash according to the washing care label of your garment, that’s it. Follow up by air drying or tumble drying, again as per care label at this stage, if you don’t feel the need to re-proof.
If you have previously used the Performance Wash to get rid of all your dirt and odours and your garments are now feeling ready for a re-proof then use the Grangers Clothing Repel liquid prior to drying. It is the same easy process as the wash, you add 100ml of Clothing Repel liquid to the washing drawer per garment, adding another 50ml for each additional garment, and wash & dry as per care labels above.
With a few hours set aside all our winter coats have now been washed and waterproofed ready for whatever the great British weather throws at us. They look clean, don’t smell damp anymore and will hopefully give us several wears before they need doing again. We spend a lot of time in wet muddy conditions walking, horse riding and watching matches at school, so it’s a godsend to find these products to revitalise our wet weather gear, especially as they are easy to use and good value for money.
The Grangers waterproofing products are great for those with busy lives, easy to apply, quick to use and most importantly can be used on a wide variety of materials, you don’t need a fabric proofer and a separate Gore-Tex proofer cluttering up your cupboards, as the multi-use wash & repel liquids work on everything. The perfect Christmas gift for those that like the great outdoors.
Highly recommended 5 out of 5.
