Yoga is one of my favourite activities and so I was really excited when I saw this beautiful special edition blue sky rainbow travel mat from Liforme. I’ve been thinking about a Liforme mat for a while as they’re the most eco friendly mat you can get. It arrived in a cardboard box and the mat was wrapped in paper inside the box and within its travel bag. I was very happy not to find any plastic wrappers. It also comes with a complimentary yoga mat bag which closes with a zip and is both compact yet substantial, the shoulder pad on the bag is particularly comfortable to carry and it’s not a struggle to replace the mat into the bag after your class.

The mat is made of rubber underneath which is completely natural of course, the top layer is made of a “specially engineered eco-friendly material” called eco polyurethane. This top layer is waterproof and dries super quick, preventing sweat from soaking in to the rubber underneath so it’s super hygienic as well as being adhesive free. The mat is actually biodegradable in normal landfill conditions in 1-5 years which I’m delighted about as the thought of all the long enduring plastic yoga mats I’ve tried over the years fills me with horror. In use, the mat is very grippy and very comfortable, definitely the best grip of any mat I’ve used. It’s only 2mm thick of course but I like a thin mat just as personal preference. It can also be used on top of another mat, often you go to a yoga studio and find mats laid out ready. People generally lay their own mats over the top but I sometimes find that creates a surface that’s too squashy for balances. With this 2mm mat it’s much more comfortable.

This feels like a full size mat to me although it’s apparently a little bit shorter than the standard non-travel version, 180 x 66 mm. It is only 2mm thick and therefore rolls up nice and small. It weighs just 1.6kg which is 40% less than the standard mat and significantly lighter than my cork mat.

The Liforme AlignForMe system is a series of angled markings in beautiful rainbow colours which help you position yourself correctly on the mat. The eco friendly and non toxic ink used to print these looks as though it will last well. Alignment is so important in yoga and it’s quite easy to position yourself incorrectly and therefore lose the benefit of your practice. Even though I’ve been practicing yoga for a very long time now I’ve never tried a mat with alignment guides on it and found it quite satisfying to use and really helpful when I try something new or difficult. As a beginner I would’ve no doubt benefitted from having this alignment system in place.

My yoga teacher was very interested when I unpacked the mat for the first time and came over to admire it saying she’d been looking at it online and was hoping to get one for Christmas. It actually looks so much more vibrant in real life and I thoroughly enjoy using it and enjoying the gorgeous rainbow lotus in the centre. All my friends love it. The same mat is available in a few colours which can be seen on the website below. This is my new favourite yoga mat, even better, it’s light enough to take on holiday!
