Now that summer has arrived it was fantastic to receive the Melissa and Doug Giddy Buggy Bowling set to review. Although we’ve spent many months in our garden during lockdown, this was a great way to refresh the space with a new toy. An added bonus is that it comes in its own carry case so it’s great for the children to pick up and take anywhere they’d like.

We’ve had many Melissa and Doug products over the years, which have all been a great hit with the children, so I was pleased to read on their website that they are a wife and husband team who ask their children to test all of the products before they are put into production. All of the toys are focussed around developing children’s gross/fine motor skills, problem solving and cognitive skills to name a few.

The parcel that I received came in a simple cardboard box, which can be easily recycled, with the toy inside. The bowling set is housed in a clear plastic bag with 2 bright green handles which is a fantastic way to store the game. As the bag is clear the children could see instantly what had been sent and it’s easy to spot when they are searching for the toys themselves. As the toy is light enough for the children to carry they loved being able to take it out and about with us when we were visiting family and friends.

The Giddy Buggy Bowling Set is aimed at 2 year olds and really simple for them to set up themselves. Both the ball and bugs are made from plastic so they are very lightweight and easy for them to manoeuvre. The toy is bright and eye catching as well as being a great tool to help young children to build up some of their core skills like hand eye coordination, counting and turn taking. Both of my children got into a great routine of setting it up for each other and making sure they both had a turn. Although it’s aimed at 2+ year olds I think you would get many years out of this toy as my four year old was very excited to receive it and enjoyed showing my two-year-old how it worked.

The children used the bowling set on both the grass, concrete and carpet. The ball moved easily on all surfaces but it was a little quicker on the concrete and tiled floor in comparison to the grass. The giddy bugs stood up on all surfaces easily for the children without them having to ask for help which is great for helping to develop independent play.

If you are looking for something to keep your children entertained this summer I would highly recommend this product. It can be used inside and out so you don’t need to worry if the British weather is a little on the wet side. The toys feel really durable and even with a few knocks on to the concrete this past week there’s minimal marks.
