Sean Hegarty Interview

When was it that you knew you wanted to go down the route of comedy?

I was never the class clown or the attention seeker that needed to be heard, growing up. I was painfully shy and wouldn’t say boo to a goose (unless the goose went to the bathroom and I hid behind the door waiting for it to come back out) but I went down the unorthodox route of trying my hand at every single job imaginable before stumbling upon stand-up comedy. While working as a care-assistant on nightshift in a nursing home for disabled adults, I began jotting down jokes in between listening to comedy podcasts. I soon had enough for a short spot somewhere and booked to go to the Edinburgh Fringe. Watched a few masters at work for inspiration then the rest, as they say, is history.

What do you enjoy doing in your leisure time?

I have a penguin sanctuary and three of them have taken a keen interest in water-skiing so a lot of my time is spent in the water, either helping them back onto their skis, or stopping them from fighting over the fish they catch whenever they fall in. Aside from that, I’m a huge lover of sports and the outdoors so if I’m not watching the Euros or following my favourite football team (Liverpool) I’m usually setting fire to something in the woods.

We would love to hear about current/future projects

At the minute, I’m working on this interview but afterwards, I’m getting stuck back into working on building my social media presence as well as preparing for some upcoming live shows I have coming up.

Who is your idol?

As a one-liner comedian, I’m a huge fan of silliness and absurdity. Comics like Tim Vine, Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer, Spencer Jones, Bo Burnham among many others.
