The Play That Goes Wrong at the Theatre Royal Brighton Review

28 August to 1 September 2018

The Theatre Royal in Brighton is probably one of my favourite theatres to go to. I love how traditional it is, the ambience, the decor. Even with its traditional appearance it fits in really well in the unique and Diverse Brighton. It really puts you in the right mood for whatever show you are going to see. The staff are always very polite, friendly, extremely well presented and on hand to help with any query that you may have. A bonus is that it’s minutes walk from car parks and local transport.

The Play That Goes Wrong is put on by the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society and is a ‘Who Done It‘. They look into the murder at Haversham Manor where Charles Haversham is murdered on the night of his engagement. As the title suggests what can go wrong does, from set disasters, injured actors and missed lines to name but a few. It is fast paced from the start with immediate audience participation needed to help with the search for Winston.

There are a number of characters that stand out for me and made the show what it is. Cecil Haversham/Arthur the Gardener aka Max Bennett, played by Bobby Hirston, was absolutely hilarious with the most amazing facial expressions that I have ever seen.

Annie the stage manager, played by Catherine Dryden, looked as if she was thoroughly enjoying what she was doing which was infectious to watch.

Lastly, Inspector Carter/The Director aka Chris Bean, played by Jake Curran, was great at the not so much calm and collected Inspector Carter.

The title the play that goes wrong actually couldn’t be further from the truth as there is so much right with it. It was truly entertaining, funny, extremely clever and impressively brought together. This was the first time in a long time when I have seen the theatre full to the rafters with the whole audience laughing and enjoying every minute.
