XO Balm Review

Reviewed by Sandip Stapleton

I am a complete lover of multi-use balms and have been for years so I was really pleased to receive a pot of XO Balm to review.

Starting with the delivery itself, the package was the right size to fit through the letterbox so there is no worry about missing the postie then having to traipse to the local post office depot. This seems like a small thing, but it is an important factor for some people.

When you open the packaging to get to the balm pot, I was quite surprised at the size of the pot. It’s a really decent size so you won’t have to go rummaging through your handbag looking for it. The pot is a sleek metal tin without any fussy design and is pretty unisex which is great. It has a big X on it with little circles on the end of each X spoke. It reminded me of a button shape, but it’s more than likely meant to be a shape based on the XO name.

Inside the lid is a mirror, which is a great touch as none of my other balms I have used in the past have had this. The mirror didn’t add much weight to the pot either do another plus for me!

The balm itself is a yellow creamy colour and there is quite a lot in the tin. There is a handy little scoop so that you can get out as much as you need without shoving your fingers in, so good from a hygienic perspective. I personally found the balm a bit tricky to get out the pot as it is quite solid and hard but to be fair, I have had the pot a week and the temperatures this week have been pretty low so I’m sure this would have had an effect. It was tricky but not too difficult for me to scoop out but someone with weaker wrist may find it hard.

It has no essential oil or perfumed scent to it as it really is a very pure, clean product. It is made from only four ingredients; beeswax, coconut oil, olive oil and chia seed oil. This is very important if you have sensitive skin or if want to use this on your kids as you can be confident you aren’t putting unnecessary chemicals on their skin.

The website claims the “balm is effective in soothing and relieving dryness, sensitive and irritated skin. This multifunctional beauty solution is used for all areas of the face, body and hair to hydrate and nourish”.

I have to admit I haven’t used it on my hair or face, but I have used it on my hands, elbows, heels and legs. Once you scoop a bit into your hands and rub it around, it smooths out into a soft pliable texture pretty quickly and goes onto the skin very smoothly. It definitely relieved my dryness and left me with very smooth, non-greasy textured skin. The area it had the most impact was the heels of my feet and I really didn’t need to use much to take effect. I was hugely impressed as it did better than the creams I have had that were specially formulated for cracked heels. This knocked the socks (pardon the pun) off those without a doubt!

I have also used this on my kid’s wrists and creases where they get eczema and it has helped soothe those areas and stopped them scratching as much as they normally do when they get a flare up.

The price of this pot is £12.50, which is comparable to what I have paid for balms in the past, but the pots have always been much smaller. And coupled with the fact that you only need a small amount of product, the value for money and the moisturising effect you get with this balm is fantastic.

This is definitely one of those desert island essential products!
