What We Wished For at the Crucible Theatre Sheffield Review

Reviewed by Trish Bramhall

I went along with my sister-in-law to see this play. When we first arrived, on seeing the scenery we weren’t quite sure what to expect. But has the play began we soon realized that it was mainly based around a retirement castle, which turned out to be situated on the outskirts of the city of Sheffield.

As the story begins you meet the different people living there – all ex-fairy tale heroes! Like: Sleeping Beauty, Robin Hood and Maid Marion, Pinocchio and many more. You then meet schoolgirl Scarlet – who is a bit mischievous and a bit of a dare devil!

The scenery was fab, and the cast did a brilliant job at changing it throughout the play, from it being the retirement castle to an ‘In the woods’ scene etc.

Scarlet becomes known as the local hero after saving a young school boy from the wolves!

There is a funny moment when Scarlett’s grandmother, who lives in the retirement castle, is day dreaming for a little while about her granddaughter and there is a visit from The Queen. And we also found it funny when Robin Hood and Maid Marion are doing a bit of yoga.

As the story continues and the rumours of the wolves attacking in the area gets around – the ex-fairy tale heroes join forces with their grandchildren to get rid of them! The audience found it very funny when one of the old guys appears dressed up with a colander on his head and a tennis racket in his hand ready to help fight off the wolves.

The cast of all ages did a very energetic performance, with brilliant singing. The story shows just how different generations can learn from each other. We really enjoyed the play. Well done to everyone involved.

Rating: 5/5
