I went with my friend to watch the Saint Petersburg Classic Ballet at The Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury on Thursday 2nd February 2017. We found the theatre fairly easily and having not visited before was very impressed with both the inside in and out. Our seats were good with a great view.

Watching a ballet was on my bucket list so I really didn’t know what to expect and didn’t read up in advance to find out what the story of Swan Lake was about. That was maybe an error! It’s hard to understand the story if you have never watched a ballet before. That said the costumes were beautiful as was the set for each of the three parts. The costumes were opulent and rich looking. It took some time to stop myself being distracted by men in white tights, not entirely sure what distracted me the most the front view or the rear!!

I was completely mesmerised from the start… albeit a little lost. The orchestra were amazing, the music transported me from my dreary week, my blocked nose and the flu I had been suffering from all week. I never dreamed of being a ballerina but for one night only I wished I was as elegant and graceful as those on stage. Wow, at times I was completely lost in the music and watching sometimes 16 ballerinas in white tutu’s glide across the stage, twirl, leap was so entrancing. Having spoken with the lady in front during the interval she said maybe this wasn’t the best introduction to ballet, that said after the finale she turned and said that was truly amazing. The principle dancer was both beautiful and amazing. There were so many pieces of music that were familiar to me, the orchestra were faultless.

Small mention for the bar, ten minute wait for a bottle of water is not good, very under staffed. I would definitely visit The Waterside again, and would recommend ballet, although not my childhood dream for one night, I did think I’d rather like to have been a ballerina!
