Explosively foot stomping and side splittingly funny!

The Broadway and West End smash hit musical, inspired by the movie, Sister Act (1992); returns to the UK with a brand new production directed and choreographed by Craig Revel Horwood (judge for Strictly Come Dancing on BBC).

The plot is ludicrous; the story of the sassy African-American Deloris Van Cartier (Alexandra Burke), a disco diva who witnesses a killing by her lover, Curtis (Aaron Lee Lambert) and is given protection in a strict, predominantly all-white convent. Disguised as a nun, and under the suspicious watch of the Mother Superior (Karen Mann), Deloris helps the sisters find their voices, unexpectedly rediscovering her own. The convent on the brink of closure, it is turned around by the most glorious musical act that brings everyone in to witness the soul sisters perform. With her new found friends, Curtis and his gang find their demise against this unstoppable group of sisterhood.

Alexandra Burke fitted her role with her larger than life personality, as Delores, she was sassy, mean and even tender and gave an outstanding performance. For me, she out shone the rest of the cast, and her powerful voice resonated through the theatre through song.

The 1970’s shone through in music, dance and costume which lent to disco fever portrayed throughout the show. Even the band was brought into the show with the nuns, police, down and outs as they were all given an instrument to play. This worked well, like in the police cells, they policemen played violins behind the bars to the baddies; the instruments were even used in some of the gags. My best part was when the Mother Superior (Karen Mann) gave a good blast of her trumpet.

The whole show was full of silly innuendoes, however, some were extremely sexualised. At times these sexual innuendoes were very in your face, and as we were seated near a young girl I was not sure how I would have felt if it were my child.

I came away from this performance singing and reiterating various gags with my husband and we would burst into laughter again. Really hoping there will be Sister Act 2!

Rating: 5/5 thumbs_up
