Can a Princess Be a Firefighter by Carole P Roman Review

Reviewed by David Savage

Carole P. Roman is the award-winning author of the Captain No Beard and If You Were Me and Lived In… series of children’s books They are always well-written, educational and contain a good moral message. So I was delighted to receive Can a Princess Be a Firefighter? for review.

Can a Princess Be a Firefighter? is the beautiful story of a little girl who loves being a princess but also would like to be a firefighter; would she have to be one or the other? The story then explains that she can be both or any other profession she chooses, why chose just one and limit your choices in life; why not be a princess who also fights fires, or practices law, or healing the sick etc…

This book is a great read with a great message that you do not have to fit into stereotypical roles and just because you might want to be one thing doesn’t mean you can’t also have an interest in another. A line in the book states “Don’t let anybody limit your dreams” and that is exactly the message children will and should take away from this book.

This book teaches that you can be anything you want to be, don’t limit your choices, always have options and you are always free to change your mind. You don’t have to be a princess or a firefighter, you can be both!

This book has been illustrated beautifully in cartoon form using pastel colours by Mateya Arkova.

An excellent, well-written story with an excellent message and would be a great addition to any child’s book collection or school library.
