I visited the Theatre Royal with my very excited girls of three and five years old to see The Tiger Who Came to Tea based on the story by Judith Kerr and adapted to the stage and directed by David Wood.

The Tiger Who Came for Tea is the story of Sophie and her Mum who have an unexpected guest for tea. The Tiger gobbles up tea of sandwiches, buns, biscuits and a cake before empting the fridge, the larder, eating the supper as well as drinking juice, beer, milk shake and even all the water in the tap!

There is some deviation from the book such as the Tiger doesn’t speak in the stage version but I think it translated well and the children connected to the Tiger. The miming and improvisation of all the characters inspired the little ones imagination. There is song and dance within the show, the variety holds the audience’s attention.

One of my three year old daughters was quite unsure of what to expect and she whispered to me (rather loudly) every time the Tiger came on stage Tiger is just pretend! She definitely was a convert and enjoyed taking part in the Tiger’s exercise routine.

Although we have not read the story that often, the girls came out able to retell the story in great detail and have spoken about it ever since. The fifty five minute performance (with no interval) is perfect for the show and this age group.

The staging was in-keeping with the book and the use of the clock although not from the book was a clever way of allowing the children to participate by counting.

The Theatre Royal is located on Hope Street in Glasgow close to bus and rail stations. It has been recently upgraded and offers a spacious entrance, lifts (which are essential with prams and pushchairs), clean and modern toilets, places to eat and sit pre and post show.
