Last night my ten year old son and I visited the Theatre Royal in Glasgow to see The Mischief Theatres production of Peter Pan Goes Wrong.
The show is a hilarious mix of mishaps and mayhem that occurs while Cornley Youth Theatre perform the J M Barrie classic Peter Pan. Anything you can imagine could go wrong, does go wrong and much more! Stage collapsing, electrocution, aerial falls, broken bones, costume mishaps… it has it all!
Before the show starts some of the cast members come through the audience getting them in the mood with a rendition of Happy Birthday.
The humour is suitable for all ages – the timing and delivery really makes the show right from the introduction. My son’s favourite scene was where Starkey the Pirate (Robert/Cornelius Booth) was taking Wendy (Sandra/Leonie Hall) hostage to the rock and experienced wardrobe malfunction, losing his trouser! Laurence Pears was also hilarious as Chris Bean taking on the roles of George Darling and Captain Hook.
The revolving stage is effective within the show allowing the audience to see the different sections of chaos simultaneously. The sound engineer’s faulty equipment drop various bombshells to members of the cast adding another dimension to the play.
The humour of the show is carried through to the programme where the Cornley Youth Theatre’s Peter Pan programme is included and is worth reading! It includes interviews, adverts and the biography of the Cornley actors.
The Theatre Royal is located in Glasgow City Centre on Hope Street, a ten to fifteen minute walk from Queen Street Station or a short taxi ride. There is plenty parking in the multi storey Cambridge Street Car park.
