Valentine’s Day Food from Aldi Review

Reviewed by Emma Lydon
I was chosen to review the Aldi Valentine’s Day food promotion and was sent a voucher to purchase my own choices from the selection available in-store. I was looking forward to trying out the meat from Aldi as I have heard rave reviews from friends of mine and, being big steak fans, I went for the British 28-day matured sirloin steak. To accompany this, I chose some frozen crinkle cut chips, the Specially Selected Green Vegetables and, to finish, the chocolate profiteroles, along with a bottle of the Clare Valley Riesling.
The steaks were a great size, nice and thick with just the right amount of marbling to ensure they were tender. And they were. They were delicious. A good few of my friends are Aldi converts and particularly where the meat is concerned they say that it is far better quality and more reasonably priced than the ‘big 3’ supermarkets. I cannot disagree, it was tasty, succulent and tender and the price was incredibly reasonable at £4.69 each. You would think that one frozen chip is much the same as the next, but I have often found that own brand chips can be a disappointment. These, however, are lovely. They crisp up nicely, fluffy on the inside and they come in a good size bag so you get value for money (came in at 79p – you really can’t argue at that). Similarly we had no complaints about the green veg accompaniment – the mint and chive butter which is in with the veg adds to the flavour and there was plenty there for two (£1.79 a pack).
I was pretty full up by this point but for the purposes of a good and thorough review, I had to squeeze in a profiterole or two! There are 8 profiteroles in the box and they come in a chocolate sauce. Now 8 might not seem like a lot, but these are not your standard profiteroles – they are HUGE! And they are smothered in delicious chocolate sauce. In fact I could only manage two and my husband three which gives an idea of how filling they are. For the meagre price £1.99 they would easily feed a family of four more than comfortably.
The wine is part of Aldi’s Exquisite Collection and even though it is one of the most expensive bottles of wine available, it is priced at a hugely reasonable £6.99. It was delicious. It had a lovely hint of sweetness to it which I enjoyed as I don’t like my wine too dry, it was crisp and really very refreshing. An absolute bargain for a lovely bottle of wine.
All in all, I cannot fault any of the food or drink bought from Aldi. Both myself and my husband had no complaints and the food was of a high quality and standard that you might not expect to find at such value prices. I will certainly be making Aldi a regular trip in the future.
