The Railway Rabbits: Bramble and the Treasure Hunt by Georgie Adams Review

Reviewed by Tracey Flintham

The Railway Rabbits – Bramble and the Treasure Hunt is book number 8 in the Railway Rabbits series by Georgie Adams. Even though the book is part of a series, you don’t need to have read any of the previous books as there is a good short introduction at the start of the book where you meet the Longear family, Wisher, Bramble, Bracken, Berry, Fern, Mellow and Barley and learn a little about their personality, likes, dislikes and favourite sayings. There is also a small family tree and map of the valley where the rabbits live.

This story is told through the rabbit’s point of view and the book starts with the Longear family eagerly awaiting the arrival of their friends, the Greyback rabbits, and their naughty twins Tansy and Teasel. However they are late and this starts to worry the Longear family, especially since there have been tales of a strange beast with big yellow eyes in the area recently. Luckily Blinker the badger finds the Greyback family and guides them safely to their destination.

On the way, the Greyback’s had passed a rock which Blinker informs them was Rohan’s Rock which causes curiosity in the naughty twins. Later that evening Mellow tells everybody about the story of Rohan’s rock and the rhyme about Rohan’s ghost and a golden apple tree. The young rabbits decide to go on an adventure in search of the golden apple tree whilst their parents are asleep and overcome many dangers such as owls and meeting a four eyed beast with yellow and red eyes.

My 7 year old was delighted with this book. It was written well for her level of understanding and was just the right length so she didn’t forget what was happening. The book is nicely illustrated on each page and the illustrations have relevance to the story at that point. The book has managed to find a good balance with a little mystery going on so the reader can try and guess what’s happening which keeps their attention.
