Last night we visited the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton to watch the musical Wicked. What can we say? WOW is for WICKED! The production, the fantastic cast, the orchestra, the costumes/make-up and the scenery made a damp Wednesday night magical.

“Are people born wicked or do they have wickedness thrust upon them?” is a question put to us at the onset.

The story begins with the town folk of OZ celebrating the death of the “Wicked Witch of the West.” The good fairy “Glinda” (Emily Tierney- original cast member of Andrew Lloyds Webber’s The Wizard of Oz) retelling the story of how she met “Elphaba” (Ashleigh Gray – I dreamed a dream, Grease, Cool Rider) at Wizardry College.

Elphaba is not accepted at first by the other students being so different, well GREEN!

The story tells of how the two girls become good friends and help each other through good times and bad, both fall in love with local heart throb “Fiyera” (Samuel Edwards – Footloose, Carousel, Sweeney Todd and Les Miserables).

The musical tells of the kindness Elphaba shows and how she cares, but when she is chosen to meet The Wizard of Oz (Steven Pinder – Brookside, Hotel Babylon, Footloose) things turn from bad to worse for her. We see how she becomes the Wicked Witch and how Glinda becomes the Good Witch. With fantastic songs and costumes this almost love story is wonderful for all the family.

A spellbinding performance!
