Last weekend we packed up the car and headed to Towyn, North Wales to visit Knightly’s Funfair. Our party of 6 ages 9, 11, 15, 44, 47, and 65 were really looking forward to all the fun of the fair – and we certainly got it!!

We found it with no problems. At the end of road is a huge billboard that you really can’t miss pointing you in the right direction. We parked in the nearby car park, it cost £3 and you received a £1 voucher off purchases on the fair. The area around the fair is buzzing and reminded me of my own seaside holidays, there are lots of arcades cafes and kiosks you can sample whilst visiting the fairground itself.

To get onto the actual fair you have to cross a footbridge that is disabled friendly as the steps are sloping to make it possible to push a wheelchair over. When you reach the other side to the right is a box office where you can purchase wristbands and tokens. A friendly member of staff gave us ours and we rushed off with excitement to explore the venue.

There are a good variety of rides (around 17) that cater for all ages. At no point did we queue for more than 5 minutes and the staff are friendly and helpful. When we visited it was a sunny Saturday but there were no big crowds and it wasn’t overly busy. In fact it was just the right amount to give a great atmosphere without being too much. Knightly’s is well thought out with plenty of picnic tables and benches scattered around and a couple of kiosks where you can buy funfair must haves – sugar dummies, candy floss, hot dogs, rock and yes they are all there along with coffee tea and soft drinks and all reasonably priced. The music is blasting from each ride but it wasn’t too loud that you couldn’t speak to each other. If you walk to the rear of the fair and up some steps you are on the beach! which makes it a brilliant location we had a wander along the beach while recovering  (well me if the truth be told) from the very, very whirly Waltzers where the very kind young man gave us plenty of pushes so we twirled and twirled and…

The dodgems were a big hit with our party as was the rollercoaster. Lottie aged 9 had 12, yes 12, goes on the latter she absolutely loved it. There is also the Twist and the Tagada for thrill seekers and a ride that spins you around in the air and then ‘drops’ your carriage that had me and everybody else screaming and laughing at the same time. The Extreme Bungee Jump and Go karts are not included in the wristbands but there are so many other attractions you can miss them out if funds are low. There is a fun house but this was a little disappointing, a helter skelter, trampolines and bouncy slide and mini pedalos for younger children and merry go rounds for the toddlers. I could not fault the variety. My party were happy with what was on offer and other visitors seemed to be too.

We spent a good few enjoyable hours on the rides before deciding we were all thrilled out and headed back over the bridge to find somewhere to grab a drink and something to eat. We settled on The Long Bar which is also owned by the Knightly family. You can sit inside or out and there is an open air theatre with evening entertainment. The girls went off to join in the dancing while we found a table, again no problem and ordered drinks burgers and chips. The drinks came fairly quickly but the meals took rather a long time. My nephew had a kebab which to be honest was very poor and not very warm but everything else was ok. The entertainment is free and as time went by the place filled up and there was a great atmosphere. We stayed a couple of hours and then decided it was home time which the kids were not happy about.

Knightly’s Funfair is a fantastic place and good value for money. My only negative is the toilets left a lot to be desired. You can easily spend an afternoon/evening here (opening times 11am – 10pm) and have plenty to do. With its seafront location it is ideal for a family day out and I will be visiting again.

The whole of my party agreed that it was a really good fair and Lottie said it was her best day ever!! out of the mouths of babes.
