Mr Personality by Carol Rose Review

Reviewed by Nicki Smith
I am quite a quick reader. I can normally get through an average length book in under a week. This book, however, took me considerably longer.
Carol Rose can clearly string a good sentence and indeed paragraph together. In fact, her style of writing is very pleasurable and fluid to read, but I just couldn’t get hooked by this book and never really looked forward to reading the next pages.
The story was banal and was truly repetitive for the first 75% of the book. The characters, Max and Nicole, whilst vaguely interesting, became frustrating in their inability to stop rehashing the same soul-searching chapter after chapter. Rather than feeling that they were trying to move forward with their issues and reflections, I simply got annoyed with them for making the same observations time and time again.
If the first 75% of the book moves at a snail’s pace, the last part speeds up so much that it becomes difficult to believe. The way the book ends is wholly predictable for a romance, of course, but how it gets there is rushed into so quickly, it sits awkwardly with the reflective nature of the beginning of the story. I really wanted to like Max and Nicole but just couldn’t believe them.
On a technical level, there are many spelling and grammatical errors in the Kindle version and the ‘cover’ really doesn’t seem to fit with the words inside!
The story won’t offend anyone, but it’s unlikely to set anyone on fire either.
If you are looking for an easy beach/holiday read, this will probably satisfy your needs and keep you entertained, but if you are looking for a book to grip you and give you a sense of escapism, I’m sorry, but you would be better off looking elsewhere…
