With the 100 Year anniversary of the sinking of the White Star RMS Titanic this great docu-drama film is released on DVD. This is the true testimonies from survivors of the how senior engineers and crew below deck in the engine and boiler rooms tried to keep the Titanic afloat.
The Titanic was the largest luxury passenger liner built in its time and was regarded as unsinkable due to its design. After setting sail on her maiden voyage from Southampton on 10th April 1912 she hit an iceberg on the 14th April and sank at 2.20am on the 15th April, sinking in under 3 hours. This unsinkable ship was gone with the loss of over 1500 lives leaving only 713 survivors. None of the senior engineering crew survived.
After hitting an iceberg which ripped a 300ft hole in the side of the ship this film shows how the engineers and crew kept the Titanic afloat 1½ hours longer than expected saving hundreds of lives. They did this at the expense of their own probably knowing that by staying below decks they had no chance of escape. They gave their lives to save as many others as they possibly could.
Overall this was a very enjoyable, although tragic, film. It shows the courage and heroism of the crew on the Titanic which is left out of the Hollywood blockbuster film. If has some interesting facts throughout explaining things like how the buying of cheap coal helped sink the Titanic. It also explains that the fourth funnel on the ship was a dummy and why it was put there. At 92 minutes long it passed very quickly and I found myself wanting to know more. Whether you liked the Hollywood blockbuster or not I think you will enjoy this true story, much more factual and shows true heroism and courage about one of the great maritime disasters. A very gripping true story, full of facts and very informative.
A great insight into the heroism that helped saved many lives. One to watch for all Titanic buffs or anyone that likes history and true stories without all the Hollywood fictional drama attached.
Highly recommended.
