Jersey Boys at Wycombe Swan Theatre Review

Jersey Boys is in our all time top three of musicals so it’s with much excitement we head to the Wycombe Swan for tonight’s performance. The Wycombe Swan is a lovely theatre in the heart of High Wycombe. Parking can be at a premium, so best to arrive in good time, which then means you have time to enjoy a quick drink in one of the bars, of which there is one on each floor.

Jersey Boys features the story and music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. This tour is celebrating its twentieth anniversary if you can believe that! Over the years we have seen it quite a few times, but it never fails to impress.

The show opened with a hip hop version in French of oh what a night, and was a cracking start of what was to come. They say the story starts under a lamplight in the streets of New Jersey back in the 60s and goes on to give the potted history of four young Italian lads who came to together in the name of music.

The vocals for this show were simply outstanding, both halves of the show full of all those hits we have come to love. All four leads were fantastic and at times the hairs stood up on the back of my neck, Luke Baker plays a superb Franki Valli and has the voice of an angel, alongside Carlo Boumouglbay (Tommy DeVito) Lewis Kennedy (Nick Massi) and Toby Miles (Bob Gaudio) they truly lit up the stage.

The staging itself is minimalist, but the cast and musicians light it up all by themselves. I lost count of the costume changes, men and women alike in their sparkly outfits looked amazing. It’s unusual (sorry to others shows) but I thought everyone got their accents spot on and pretty consistently.

I can’t think of any other show that is packed both halves full of show stopping hits and songs. I literally couldn’t pick a favourite, they include so many, Walk Like a Man, Sherry, Big Girls Don’t Cry, but I guess my personal favourites would be My eyes adored you and Who loves You.

We mustn’t forget the musicians, who were also outstanding and played beautifully throughout the show, the brass sections were brilliant along with the sax player. It’s truly a star quality show that delivers on all fronts. It’s a difficult story to tell in a couple of hours, but it really does cover Frankie Valli and the four seasons story well. For one night only, I felt I was in the room with superstars, we love ya baby! If you love good music and great entertainment then grab your ticket quickly, the Jerseys Boys are only in town until Saturday, it would be a real shame to miss them.

The show is two hours twenty minutes which includes a 15 minute interval.
