As a mum who is constantly juggling snacks, treats, and the tastes of a household that spans three generations, finding something everyone genuinely enjoys can feel like discovering treasure. The Waitrose Dark Chocolate & Ginger Florentines are a special treat loved equally by my three year old and my seventy six year old mother, and everyone in between. In fact, loved a bit too much, because they seem to vanish almost as soon as they had been received. I had to stop my teenage son demolishing the packet before I had taken a photo.

From the first bite, it’s easy to see why they disappear so quickly. The Florentines strike that perfect balance between indulgent and refined. The dark chocolate is rich but not overpowering smooth, glossy, and with that satisfying snap that tells you it’s good quality. It pairs beautifully with the warmth of the candied ginger, which gives each bite a gentle zing without being too spicy for younger tastebuds. I expected my three‑year‑old to turn her nose up at the ginger, but she happily munches them, declaring them “yummy chewy chocolate biscuits.” Meanwhile, the grown‑ups appreciate the slightly more sophisticated flavour.

The texture is another highlight. Florentines can sometimes be too chewy or too brittle, but these hit the sweet spot, crisp around the edges, slightly chewy in the centre, and coated underneath with a generous layer of velvety dark chocolate. They feel like something you’d expect from a boutique bakery rather than straight off a supermarket shelf.

One thing I love as a mum is how shareable they are. There’s something very communal about opening a box of Florentines after dinner or during a family movie night and watching every hand, from tiny toddler fingers to my mum’s older, slightly wrinkly ones, reach in to grab one. They are an easy win for tea with grandparents, quick treats for visitors, and a delightful little moment of calm during the chaos of parenting. Even better, they require no slicing, plating, or fussing. Open, distribute, enjoy, repeat.

The only “problem” (if you can call it that) is just how fast they go. I’ve learned that if I want any for myself, I need to claim one early, or hide them in the secret chocolate stash cupboard because once my husband and son get going, the box empties in minutes. They’re the type of treat you plan to eat slowly and savour… and then accidentally inhale in record time because they’re that moreish.

In terms of value, for a supermarket treat they feel wonderfully luxurious. Waitrose clearly uses quality ingredients, and it shows in the flavour, texture, and overall finish of the Florentines. They make a lovely addition to a dessert platter or coffee break, and they’re fancy enough to give as a gift (if you can resist keeping them for yourself).

In our house, the Waitrose Dark Chocolate & Ginger Florentines have officially earned legendary status: the treat that crosses generations and brings a little moment of happiness to everyone at the table. A truly delightful family favourite, just be prepared to buy two boxes if you want to make sure you get one.

The RRP is £5.25 for a box of 8 but they are currently on sale at £4.10.

You can buy them from Waitrose in the luxury biscuit aisle or from here.

Rating: 5/5 simply delicious.
