What a glorious evening spent with my favourite people, lovely food, in a beautiful open space, listening to some of the best music from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. They most definitely delivered a classical extravaganza and hit all of the right notes.
On arrival at Meyrick Park (there is plenty of nearby street parking), we were greeted by very friendly Marshalls who scanned our tickets, passed us a bag for any litter and welcomed us onto the site. The atmosphere was set by music playing over the field already – a lovely touch. The stage was ready with two very large screens to project close ups of the musicians and the field was already a third full with people enjoying their picnics. We found a nice spot, very central, to lay out our chairs and picnic blanket. The relaxed, communal vibe was palpable; families, couples, and groups of friends ready to bask in an evening of culture and exquisite entertainment.
The concert was conducted by the BSO’s calleva assistant conductor, Enyi Okpara, whose energy and passion brings timeless pieces to life in an unforgettable way. The compere for the evening was the BSO’s Chief Executive, Dougie Scarfe, who’s anecdotes throughout the evening were received well.
After a short ‘tune up’, the orchestra opened the evening with the vibrant and engaging Superman March by John Williams, this set the tone right from the opening bars.
The evening’s programme was a thrilling tapestry of classical gems and cinematic favourites. Amongst others, Tchaikovsky’s Polonaise & Waltz, and Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances carried the audience along with their stirring rhythms and emotional arcs. There were many feet tapping along to Hérold’s Clog Dance, which was a really lovely lyrical piece. Moments of serene beauty arrived via Dvorak’s Largo from New World Symphony and Elgar’s WN, Nimrod & EDU from The Enigma Variations, offering poignant contrast amidst the more exuberant selections. Film fans were treated to iconic scores by John Williams, including the heart-warming E.T Adventures on Earth and the brassy fanfare of the Superman March at the very beginning of the evening.
The musical journey culminated in a dazzling pyrotechnic and fireworks display that lit up the night sky during the last couple of works. It was perfectly timed to the orchestra’s chords and was a great visual for all those present – a breath-taking finale. After which the orchestra concluded with flight of the bumblebee to a full field standing ovation.
It’s the perfect way to soak up the season, enjoying a summer’s evening under the stars, surrounded by beautiful live music and the natural charm of Meyrick Park. Ideal for both classical aficionados and casual summer-goers. There’s chance to catch another outdoor concert by the BSO at Meyrick Park this evening (Saturday 9th August 2025), don’t hesitate to get your tickets as you won’t regret this incredible evening.
