Thursday night I reviewed 60 Hope Street in Liverpool. Prior to visiting, I spoke to a friend who stated “That’s the best restaurant I’ve been to in Liverpool”. That was a strong statement to make so it had a lot to live up to.

I called to check the booking the day before (as I always do) and spoke to a very professional and friendly female who quickly confirmed our 6pm slot.

When we arrived after a brisk 15 minute walk from Liverpool Lime Street station, we were again greeted by friendly staff. Jamie identified himself as the restaurant supervisor that night and offered us to our table, situated next to the front window overlooking the street.

The table was beautifully laid out and all menus were presented over to us, including the evening’s specials. A small tray of fresh bread was brought to us, served with real butter.

Having never been to this part of Liverpool before I was amazed by the culture and architecture of the local buildings. 60 Hope Street has a townhouse setting in the beautiful location of the Georgian quarter, three stories high with the restaurant, lounge bar and an upstairs events room which host weddings and reception parties. Whilst there I noticed a mix of customers, elderly (possibly due to the close proximity to the Philharmonic), business persons and young couples.

The menu’s, (I’m assured) change on a monthly basis, to enable new and regular customers to sample various cuisines. The variety of choice is adequate and not too over whelming to give you too much choice. Less is often more. The wine menu was more than adequate and we were offered a Moldovan Merry Mole Merlot to accompany our meal. This was chosen by Jamie who assisted in every way.

At “60”, as it’s often called there are different menus that cover the time of day, party or budget. It’s a little on the more expensive side if you go for the A La Carte menu but this offers such culinary cuisine as Pigs Cheeks, with artichoke, black pudding & crackling (starters) or Fillet of Hartshead Beef with Ox Cheek Croquette and triple Cooked Chips, Sautéed Baby Spinach & Shallot Rings (main). This I would save for a special occasion, anniversary or engagement dinner.

The Table D’ Hote Menu offers a fantastic two courses for £24.95 or three courses for £29.95. For the starter I opted for the Pork & apple sausage roll, with apple & brown sauce chutney. A strange concoction to say the least, in such a renowned restaurant but the taste was wonderful and most suitably served with the chutney. My wife opted for the braised menai mussels, with cider & tarragon. These were served in a bowl with lovely juices flowing from the mussels.

I was a little wary of the portion sizes as I have a large appetite. Quite often in the more upmarket restaurants I have left with room to spare so on looking around the room I could see the mains being served to the present customers which influenced my main course choice.

For the main I had opted for the braised beef faggot, with hispy cabbage, bacon & jersey royals. My wife choose the marinated Lancashire chicken breast served with sauté potatoes, apple, black pudding & mustard sauce. After a little “chit chat” time the main was presented to us by Jamie and his staff along with two sides of chips and long stemmed broccoli. From my point of view, the faggot was tremendously well put together and it fell apart most succulently as I cut into it. This was very well partnered with the cabbage and potatoes. As usual I took part in sampling the wife’s chicken dish, although I initially stayed away from it due to the “mustard” sauce. I must say though, the mustard sauce was delicate to the palate and the chicken was moist and beautiful, cooked with the skin still on it. My wife complimented this dish stating that the skin was the nicest she had ever tasted on chicken.

As we were so stuffed, we were unable to sample the dessert menu, much to my wife’s disappointment, so we must return and next time forgo the starters.

“60” is run by two brothers and has been in service now for some 17 years. They have a regular fan base and I’m sure this is not just due to the fantastic location and fine architectural building. It’s very clean and tidy and the staff are wonderful and welcome customers with open arms. The food is first class and I would certainly agree with my friend that it could be one of the best in Liverpool. If not it’s most certainly one of those hidden gems, to people who don’t know the area.

I would rate this venue as 5/5 on service, food and location and I would visit again for a special occasion.
