The Zap Chef Rolled Lab Ice-cream maker looks incredible on the box, which is really colourful, in the shape of an ice-cream van which makes it really appealing to younger children. It makes the ice-cream maker look really exciting, quick and easy. On opening the box you will find a set of instructions on how to fill and use the freeze tray, also the base mix for all the ice creams. This is a mix of milk, cream, and sugar. There is also a recipe sheet, which gives you ideas and recipes such as Banana ice-cream, peanut butter ice-cream, and unicorn ice-cream. All the ice-creams start with the base mix.
The box also has a light blue plastic base, two spatulas to mix and roll the ice-cream, a child safe plastic knife to chop your fruit or chocolate, a spoon, a mortar to crush your fillings, a small jug, and a freezer tray. The blue tray has built in holders for the utensils, and there is even a little chopping board and storage space for your ice-cream toppings. Adult supervision is required to fill the freeze tray, and care is needed when taking out the freezer in order not to touch the freeze plate.

After preparing the freeze tray, I left it in the freezer for around 7 hours, they recommended 4-6 hours.
We tried a vanilla ice-cream to start with, and it worked, our rolling was not fantastic but it worked. As two of us in the house are dairy free, we also tried a plant based cream which also worked. It was nice to be able to make two different ice-creams without having to wait hours in-between them. The freeze tray lasts around one hour, you can make roughly 2 jugs before you have to refreeze the tray. We made vanilla, dairy free vanilla and a kinder Bueno ice-cream which tasted amazing. The cream does defrost very quickly ,so you need to get all of your fillings and toppings ready first. The tray and utensils are really easy to clean after your child has finished their creations.
The mix does not freeze instantly, so it does take a bit of time to get a solid ice-cream. The longer you leave the cream on the tray the thicker it should become. The younger of the children did start to lose interest whilst waiting for the cream to set.
The ice-cream maker is really easy to use, apart from preparing the freeze tray and measuring the base mix, children aged 6+ could easily make their own creations without a lot of adult supervision.
I did find opening the box was a slight let down, the box looked really exciting, when in fact the contents looked in my opinion, quite cheap. I also think it would have been nice if the box had also contained some paper Ice-cream pots.
I also believe that the pink and pale blue is aimed at girls rather than being a unisex product, which is a bit disappointing.
Don’t get me wrong the children had great fun making their own ice-cream, the girls did not care what colour the product was, however the boys thought that it was a girl’s toy, which is a shame. They did not mind eating the ice-cream but didn’t want to use the ice-cream maker.
The Zap Chef Rolled Lab Ice-cream maker does make a good end product if you follow the instructions and freeze the tray for long enough.
With Christmas coming up the Zap Chef Rolled Lab Ice-cream maker set would make a lovely Christmas present, or even a nice birthday present. It’s not overly expensive at £19.99.
I will give the Zap Chef Rolled Lab ice-cream maker set 3/5 .
Rating: 3/5
