Being of a certain age and not having much money I didn’t really use any sort of wet/baby wipes so really only started to use them when my grandchildren came along. This is when I became aware that not all of them were suitable for some of the skin conditions that some of the children had, eczema, super sensitive skin etc so I was very interested in the claims made by ‘Waterwipes’.
Wet wipes for babies were introduced in the 1980’s and became very popular in the 1990’s and have always contained some chemicals and plastics so when Edward McCloskey’s baby daughter developed nappy rash he began to explore what was in them and were he could find baby wipes that would be suitable for her sensitive skin. He spent years on research and testing to develop the ‘Waterwipe’, a wipe that would be gentle enough for new born skin and be able to be used on sensitive skin as well.
The ’Waterwipes’ journey started in 2008 when the first prototype was made. In 2012 they were advertised on television and by 2013 they were available not only here but in the U.S followed in 2016 entry into the French market, this was quickly followed by Canada (2015) and United Arab Emirates in 2018. According to Google they are now sold in over 50 countries.
So, what makes them different to the many baby wipes available on the market?
They have only two ingredients Aqua (purified water) and Citrus Grandis (grapefruit seed extract) and on their website, www.waterwipes.com, they claim:
*No harsh chemicals
*Dermatologically approved
*Ultra-soft & gentle
*Made in Ireland
They also claim to be 99.9% water based and plastic free, they are bio-degradable (but NOT flushable) and the ‘Waterwipes’ are suitable for all skin types and can also be used for ‘intimate’ care in adults.
In 2018 ‘Waterwipes’ also developed the textured ‘Clean wipes’ and ‘Extra large Bathing wipes’ in 2019 . They were branded No 1 in 2020 and this was followed by the launch of Plastic free wipes and Adult care wipes. They have also won awards and in 2023 ‘Waterwipes’ became the first baby wipe to be certified as ‘microbiome-friendly’ by Microbiome who are an independent body that is made up of scientists. These scientists test and evaluate the impact of ‘items’ upon the skin so to achieve this accreditation was a huge achievement.
So, are they any good?
First the packaging, it is white background with different shades of blue that immediately makes you think of water, there is a sleeping baby in a soft blanket in a lovely shade of beige and there is lots of information. It manages to tell you all the relevant information, i.e. 99.9% water, 3.in.1 cleans+cares+protects, sensitive-newborn & baby. 0% fragrance % alcohol, 2 X stronger thicker & softer, plant based & plastic free plus the amounts of wipes (60) and the size (17.8 x 16.8 cm), without ‘over-crowding’ and confusing the buyer. That is just the front of the packaging, which is repeated on the sides, and then on the back there is information on the founder, information on the 3-in-1 water technology and then all the ‘official’ information needed on any product. There is also a large DO NOT FLUSH and small symbols telling you to put them in a bin, they will keep for 1 month after opening and of course the bar code.
I liked the packaging, it somehow felt clean and calming, just what you want for babies and it wasn’t over whelming with its information but told you everything you needed to know.
Now for the wipes:
They were lovely and soft, felt really strong but at the same time really gentle and as promised no fragrance. I have no baby grandchildren at the moment so invited a friend around with her 5month old son. We used the ‘Waterwipes’ at his nappy change and after his feed, they were really nice to use and we only needed one at a very messy nappy change due to them being a good size and strong! She was very pleased they had nothing in them that would harm his very delicate skin and did admit that she had used them in the past but found them a little bit expensive. We also used them to clean up her 3year-old son after his chocolate pudding! very effective.
To sum up:
I think the ‘Waterwipes’ would be really good for a new born especially with the added reassurance that there is nothing harmful in them. The only down side might be the price, the prices range from £3.99 per pack to £11.00 for 3 packs although there are a number of offers around at the moment so it is worth shopping around. Unfortunately, you can purchase a pack of wipes for as little as 70p and not everyone can afford more. I would highly recommend them for new born babies and for as long as you can afford them as they were lovely to use.
