We were lucky to receive an outdoor game called Waboba Backnine to play with and review. From it’s name you wouldn’t guess what it is but it’s an outdoor frisbee type game for kids (aged from 8 years old) and adults. The packaging says “it’s bocce meets disc golf”. I didn’t know what bocce was but I knew this Waboba Backnine outdoor was fun. Waboba are a Swedish company that started in 2005 and have invented lots of games and toys that people can play with. Their mission is to “Keep Life Fun”. This game of Backnine consists of a light plastic, firm ring, 4 soft flexible silicone, brightly coloured and patterned Wingman discs, a score card and a very handy storage bag. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw there was a storage bag as I find that not many games these days include them and when there is more than one item to a game, a storage bag just makes sense, and given that this is an outdoor game, it makes it really easy to chuck in the boot of your car for when you are driving to go and spend the day in the park. It’s a very lightweight game too so it’s perfect to carry around adding any bulk or weight.

The main premise of this Backnine game is a throwing game test you on-target skills. The larger firm disc is thrown at a distance to set the ‘target’. Then each player gets a bright silicone disc that they have to aim and glide to the target. These discs are a very tactile material in yellow, pink, blue and lime with trippy, psychedelic patterns on them. Each player takes it in turns to have their go where they need to aim, throw and land their disc on or in the ring in the fewest throws possible, which you can track on the scorecards. There is a QR code on the score cards which allows you to download electronic scorecards too which is a good touch if you don’t have a pen with you. It’s a very simple concept for a game but lots of fun. The parts are all very well made so this is definitely a game you will own for years. And as the kids get older, it can be made more difficult by throwing the ring further away (garden size dependent). We have also used this in the local park by just using the main ring as a frisbee which is an added bonus.

Because of it’s portability, this game would be ideal to take to the park or beach, but given you can set where the target is, and the fact that the silicone discs glide with some accuracy, you can play this in the garden too. We will definitely be packing this in the suitcase for our summer holiday abroad as it carries very minimal weight and would be good to play on the beach in between splashing around in the water and sunbathing.
